Anyone else notice that “white ethnics” are more maga than DAR/mayflower/wasp types?

Thoughts? Isn’t this the exact opposite of 20-30 years ago?

Yep, thank the Catholic Church.

I defer to others on whether it is the Catholic Church or not. But very clearly the MAGA Irish and Italians who were discriminated against for decades are leading the charge against the next groups fighting discrimination. Justice A-hole is leading the charge. Pulling up the ladder, nothing more.

Are "the Irish" really a thing outside a few pockets in Massachusetts and New York at this point? Most "Irish Americans" are generic white Americans who might have an Irish last name.

The most privileged tend to enjoy luxury beliefs so they tend to lean left hardest.

Keeping Social Security, Medicare, and the ACA are luxury beliefs????

WASPs can’t get too excited about much of anything. But the racist streak within WASP culture embraces the GOP.

This is absolutely incorrect. There are plenty of conservatives in WASP circles.

Oh, that's easy. Because they've only been invited to the "white" club most recently (mostly post-WW2). Their position within the dominant caste is most tenuous and therefore, they are most extreme in terms of enforcing racial lines of demarcation.

My family is Eastern European meets Anglo Saxon. The eastern European conservatism has nothing to do with joining the dominant caste (???) recently. It has to do with traditional values and an abiding dislike of socialist type policy. I saw some support of Trump round 1, less now after Jan 6. They also have an abiding dislike of dictators and any kind of election grabs. Sometimes values clash, and since Biden has little appeal it's a tough time to be an old world conservative.

More like abolishing the police, defunding ICE, trans women are women, and dismantling the nuclear family.

This. My in-laws are these people 100%. They are still mad that they weren't accepted to a country club in their area like 30-40 years ago and attribute it to them being Catholic and having several children. It took me a really long time to understand that this is their worldview and it affects everything they do. I'm not sure I would have made the decision to marry my husband if I fully understood this. It's a pretty toxic way to go through life.

Massachusetts liberal WASPs are common.

Southern WASPs are all for Trump because he caters to their now evangelical and prosperity doctrine. But like most WASPs, generations of training to repress emotion and behave properly mean they don’t give into the MAGA behavior.

I think it’s the opposite . Daughters of the Revolution is an antiquated name and they also have antiquated thinking. Do they wear stripes or bold colors yet?

White ethnics like the Polish in Illinois, Italians in New York, Irish in Massachusetts, or Jews in Florida were famously strong Democrats.

Maybe things changed as of late but overall, DAR /WASPS lean Republican. The entire Southern upper class is essentially WASP. .

Which makes no sense since the GOP hasn't met a union it didn't want to bust.

And democrats haven't seen a steel mill or a coal mine that they didn't want to regulate out of existence. That's before we get to NAFTA (kind of surprising that the party who is supposedly pro-labor is also the anti-protectionist party) or non-economic issues

Dems support union rights, minimum wages, and affordable care, all of which are opposed by the tribe. As for NAFTA, pro-labor does not necessarily mean pro-protectionist. Labor benefits if foreign markets are open for US manufactured goods.

Reagan started NAFTA. Bush continued to push for it, Clinton signed it.

Google "maquiladora" program and Reagan.

The idea that the Tribe opposed NAFTA and other free trade policies as well as globalization is false. Morever, the only real means to return more manufacturing to the US is to have a stronger Federal govt that regulates businesses to penalize them or otherwise to force them to keep manufacturing in the US. The Tribe of course opposes more federal govt regulation.

Very, very, very, very few Mayflower/DAR eligible types are MAGA. They don't have to be.

MAGA is (mostly) for angry, lower middle class white men (not that there's anything wrong with any of those categorizations) who are convinced someone's "taking" something from them.

+1 the WASPY people I knew from Connecticut or the Boston suburbs were more Rockefeller Republicans, Romney-to-Clinton voters. Now voting Biden.

Absolutely.

Agree 100%

And that's exactly what the GOP has tapped into and promoted - that the "other" is responsible for their miserable lives.

Which is justified.

Who are the other?

The “other” is corporate greed, not someone working two jobs to keep a roof over their head.

So, if corporate greed is responsible, the solution would have to be more federal govt regulation not less. I do not believe the Republican party is known for supporting more regulation.
