Whoopi says the Holocaust was not about race

She's going to need more time than that.

Good point. She should ask for a year off.

Do you consider Judaism a faith?

Yes - and an ethnicity, perhaps. But not a race.

I guess these days, it depends how your feeling about what you are.

Judaism is not a race, it is an ethnicity that does, for some, incorporate a blood lineage. But, there are others that practice Judaism, who are not genetically linked to these ethnic groups- and Jews can be just about any race. However, the Jews in Europe were murdered as they were deemed to be an inferior race by the Nazis, so it was about Hitler's misconception of race, and it was about his determination to create a master race. So it was racial.

What hasn't been discussed here is the response from the Anti Defamation league spokesman commenting on the rise of anti Semitism from the right "and left."
I'm Jewish and no, this really isn't coming from the left. It's very disturbing that being critical, in any way, of Israeli policy regarding the Palestinian issues, the land issues, etc., becomes anti Semitism. It absolutely is not. One is about a country and it's political decisions. Anti-Semitism is about Jews, period. I take more issue with that, than Whoppi's faux pax. One can see how Whoopi's comment was problematic, but one can also understand what she misunderstood. She misunderstood abd she apologized and did
a lot of clarification. It wasn't at call an anti Semitic comment, it was an uneducated comment- which, btw, Mayim Bialek agreed with!

She's said some pretty dumb things in the past, and this was in need of clarification, for sure, but I wasn't too thrilled with the gentleman's criticism of the left, and he sure didn't explain that either- but everyone knew what he meant.

Made even more “weird” by the history of racial segregation in the US that, no doubt, classified Jews from European backgrounds as “white”, So we have the Nazi’s view of race, the US view of race and “racial purity tests” that predate the Nazis, and we’re struggling to communicate our concerns using today’s standards.

Who’s we? Also, struggling with what concern?

Those of us who are trying to use our own categories: such as race, religion, and ethnicity— to describe and discuss concerns related to identify that may not fit neatly, or even at all, into those categories.

I’m not sure what you’re struggling with. Nazis viewed Jews as a race. The exterminated six million Jews on that basis. Where this fits into 2022 talk of intersectionality does not matter.

If you don't think there are Anti-Semitism coming out of the left I would like to introduce you to The Squad and the rise of the Progressives.

Again, not all Jews agree with issues about Israel's gov't policies.

No, it’s a religion. You can practice it and convert to it. Just like Baptist, catholic, Muslim, etc.

It’s disingenuous to ignore the ethnicity element of it.

To you. Not to me.

To anyone sane - it is disingenous.

+1, the ignorance on this thread is startling. My 23&Me DNA profile indicates it's more than a religion.

I've been Jewish since birth. Zero DNA to any Jewish bloodline. Maybe it is you that doesn't quite get it.

It’s both and I think anyone sane acknowledges that.

See that's what I thought. But once a woman was socializing with us and referenced my friend being Jewish and she was so offended. But I am confused because her dad is Jewish but she felt like it's racist because no one can "look" Jewish. I've also heard a few others with this background say this...

I think it is kind of offensive to generally comment about people's looks. I think people also don't like it when they say - you're so exotic, what are you, etc. My DNA test says I'm Jewish so there's not really a debate that it's an ethnicity. DNA tests don't identify religion.

Your 10+ posts in your dna sample only prove the insular tribal exclusive nature of Jews. Not a new definition of race, tribe, religion, science, ethnicity, purism, etc. it just says your dna history has negligible intermixing. That doesn’t mean you invented a race out of it. Iceland dna has the same lack of mixing (and genetic defect risks), are they are “race?”

No, just a set of people not intermixing with others.

This, 23&me harpie.

Jews have only been considered white for about twenty years. I grew up in the seventies and believe me, no one thought my family was white. My grandparents immigrated from various parts of Europe and didn't speak a word of Polish, German or Russian. Their immigration documents said "Hebrew" under race. People only say Jews are white now because most benefit from white privilege.

And you're not racist, huh? Good grief.
And, no you are still wrong about how I am Jewish without a genetic line.

The white German Jew shares more DNA with the Ethiopian Jew than with a WASP. That is a fact.
Jews have only been considered white since being white went out of style.

I don’t know why you wouldn’t acknowledge the fact that it’s both for a lot of people or one or the other. It’s literally a fact and not an opinion.
