It was an ethnic cleansing, not a racial cleansing.

IMO, a lot of people don't understand the difference between race and ethnicity.

However, the Nazis did believe in racial purity and supremacy, which is why they hated that Jesse Owens won the track gold medal.

Judaism is more than just a religion. It's an ethnicity. To the Germans, Jews were not the right race, it wasn't just a matter of what they believed.

mixed race German/black children were some of the first victims, Romany are another race. until the 19th century, Jewish people where not considered European. In the United Staes census, well into the twentieth century Jewish births were recorded as jew/hebrew for race, not white. Jewish people very recently gained acceptance as a European people, mostly AFTER the horrors of 20th century. remember when the poles expelled them from Poland, b/c they weren't 'Polish"? That was in like the 1960s! Nazi ideology was race based hence the deaths of many of their victims including jewish Germans was race based.

SOME Catholics, other catholics did just. fine. the Catholics who were targeted weren't targeted b/c they were "catholic" they were targeted b/c their practice of Catholicism forced them to go against Nazi policies. Pope Benedict was in ethical Hitler youth, they had a problem with bleeding heart "social justice" Catholics, they wee fine with catholicism as a whole. you could even be in the SS if you were Catholic (You had to identify as Christian officially for the SS, eventhough a lot of Nazis were Neo Pagans)

It was an ethnic cleansing with a foundation in making Germans (Aryans) the master race by eliminating all people with undesirable traits. First they started with the disabled under the T4 program, and once that was so successful and they had killed hundreds of thousands of disabled babies, children and adults in Germany alone, and figured out how to do it quickly and efficiently (this is when gas chambers were initially designed, to kill a large number of disabled people quickly), they moved onto other groups who had "undesirable" traits (criminals, alcoholics, chronically unemployed, Romas, Jews, etc).

It seemed to be all based on eugenics and I still don't fully understand why Jewish people were considered to have undesirable traits that are hereditary (but this was a commonly held belief, they were shifty, they were sneaky, couldn't be trusted, and those characteristics are developed ingrained in their DNA and are genetic so we can't have them in the gene pool, get rid of them). Even in the US this belief was common, and hence strict immigration laws and quotas were made in the US preventing "too many Jews" from immigrating here. So the US just kept them out. Germany murdered them via genocide. Absolutely horrible in every way.

Whoopi says a lot of $hit to get airway and views. I wouldn't put a lot of credence into what she says. The Holocaust was absolutely, 100% completely horrific, especially for Jewish people.
