It’s both and I think anyone sane acknowledges that.

See that's what I thought. But once a woman was socializing with us and referenced my friend being Jewish and she was so offended. But I am confused because her dad is Jewish but she felt like it's racist because no one can "look" Jewish. I've also heard a few others with this background say this...

I think it is kind of offensive to generally comment about people's looks. I think people also don't like it when they say - you're so exotic, what are you, etc. My DNA test says I'm Jewish so there's not really a debate that it's an ethnicity. DNA tests don't identify religion.

Your 10+ posts in your dna sample only prove the insular tribal exclusive nature of Jews. Not a new definition of race, tribe, religion, science, ethnicity, purism, etc. it just says your dna history has negligible intermixing. That doesn’t mean you invented a race out of it. Iceland dna has the same lack of mixing (and genetic defect risks), are they are “race?”

No, just a set of people not intermixing with others.

This, 23&me harpie.

It’s multiple people who got similar results - not one person commenting. That’s how anonymous message boards work.

No, it’s a religion. You can practice it and convert to it. Just like Baptist, catholic, Muslim, etc.

It’s disingenuous to ignore the ethnicity element of it.

To you. Not to me.

To anyone sane - it is disingenous.

+1, the ignorance on this thread is startling. My 23&Me DNA profile indicates it's more than a religion.

I've been Jewish since birth. Zero DNA to any Jewish bloodline. Maybe it is you that doesn't quite get it.

I don’t know why you wouldn’t acknowledge the fact that it’s both for a lot of people or one or the other. It’s literally a fact and not an opinion.

That was a word salad of questionable something and, no, it's your opinion.

I was fine with an apology. I didn’t need her to get a two week break - personally.

Jews have only been considered white for about twenty years. I grew up in the seventies and believe me, no one thought my family was white. My grandparents immigrated from various parts of Europe and didn't speak a word of Polish, German or Russian. Their immigration documents said "Hebrew" under race. People only say Jews are white now because most benefit from white privilege.

I can't even believe I just read this ^^^. The only people who didn't consider Jews "white" were Nazis. And my white, Jewish grandparents also immigrated from Europe.

Italians and Irish weren't considered white, and you think Jews were? There are people who are not actual Nazis who still think that way even now.
I personally was considered non-white a mere twenty-five years ago. I remember it very well.

I think you’re right. I don’t think she was trying to downplay the Holocaust, but that’s how it came across. She made an ass out of herself and should apologize.

She might view Jews as white - many do see them as white in modern times. But it doesn't matter.

The Holocaust was about killing Jews (and others) and to lose sight of that or to say otherwise is unacceptable. It isn't just about hate, it was about specifically hating Jews.

And also specifically hating and killing gays people, and the disabled, the Romas and blacks and others 6+ million of them. What an awful, awful period in history. I can’t even imagine where was the humanity.

The black people and disabled obviously were probably the easiest to round up and kill, I imagine by the time they worked their suzy around to type other groups they’d had time to fine tune their techniques. God thing they lost. I imagine very few groups would have been safe had they won.

What? Where did you grew up? I was born in 1970 and this was not my experience.

Straight up here. Not joking. I am very ignorant in this area. I was educated in the south, didn't know a Jewish person until I was 40 years old (now over 50) I thought Jews were conidered white. I had no reason to think otherwise. I mean of course I knew the horror of the holocaust, but I always thought it was PRIMARILY about religion and Hitler's goal to create a master race.

Made even more “weird” by the history of racial segregation in the US that, no doubt, classified Jews from European backgrounds as “white”, So we have the Nazi’s view of race, the US view of race and “racial purity tests” that predate the Nazis, and we’re struggling to communicate our concerns using today’s standards.

Who’s we? Also, struggling with what concern?

Those of us who are trying to use our own categories: such as race, religion, and ethnicity— to describe and discuss concerns related to identify that may not fit neatly, or even at all, into those categories.

How did you respond to the census question regarding your race?

If Israel is supported by how they continue to annex land, the USA and Europe should not play double standards and get out of the way of Russia and Ukraine.

DP. I responded Jewish on the last one. It was the first time it was an option that I recall.

What you describe is the evolution of how the Irish and Italian were accepted into America’s family of whiteness.

In. Thanks for responding. As messed up as DCUM is, you can learn new information from people. After you responded Jewish, was there a follow up question similar to the Hispanic category? In the Hispanic category you are then asked Black, Asian, White, Two or more races.

I am a Jewish woman was born in 1973 in Chicago. My mother told me when growing up throughout the 1980s to not advertise my Jewishness, that we were recently treated like white people in America and to not lose that status.
