PARCC test results - slight increase in scores overall, white students see drop, Wilson plunges

Anonymous
Most countries in Europe have a big 'final' test to graduate from high school; I think it makes sense, although it should be combined with the normal GPA to get to a final pass/fail threshold. Just in case a poor kid totally bombs the test but is an otherwise good student.

It's not as bad at Brent, e.g. Perhaps because there are way fewer OOBers and the whole catchment zone is fairly expensive housing? Weird that the white kids at Watkins and Maury do a bit better than those at Brent.

Not really, at least for Watkins. The white kids at Watkins have historically been among the highest-performers in DCCAS too. It's a true tale of SES-split.

As a white parent IB for Watkins, I wonder if I should send my kid there. The scores for whites are almost unbelievable -- 86/92!

well ... why wouldn't you?

Makes sense, but wouldn't fly here.

Would expose the crappy ed system we have, and teacher unions wouldn't like it.

IF the system is "Crappy" it's the adminstration's fault, not the union's.

Kudos for them for scoring highest in city.

I always knew Banneker deserved more love here!

Same here. Year after year we say it but the white population still lingers under 1%. Just goes to show how deep racist lines go.

Go take your ignorant and racist BS elsewhere.

Much appreciated.

ok so how do you explain the complete lack of white interest in Banneker?

Ignorant and racist???! I am an AA parent that intends to send my AA child to Banneker. Every year Banneker kills testing and people on DCUM talk about how great they are doing but every year they opt out of even applying to Banneker. Then some on DCUM say it's because they counsel or kick out students that don't do XYZ. My thing is most of these high performing white kids would have no problem maintaining the standards at Bannker. Seriously. Why don't more white families give Banneker a shot? My belief is that it has to do with deep down racial feelings.

I am definitely going to consider it, but unsure if my white child will have the motivation for it! (Same reason I don't see him at Basis.)

True, but it's the teacher unions the ones with the massive political leverage.

I was hoping that Banneker could continue to fly under the radar. The school is doing well without the ignorant, pushy interference of the entitled crowd.

did every school take PARCC at the same time? like SAT? Perhaps Walls and Banneker managed to schedule test review around PARCC, instead of clashing...

Are the teachers any good, or does the wide gap in scores mean that the white kids are doing all their learning at home?

It's different than the SAT - there are windows that a school or LEA has to complete testing in. Not sure how DCPS pushed out the guidance from OSSE - whether schools had choice in the windows or not. http://osse.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/osse/publication/attachments/PARCC%20test%20windows%20announcement_Spring16_v02.pdf

Yes, white kids who choose Wilson are obviously racist. Good lord, PP. You sound ridiculous.

High SES kids (irrespective of ethnicity) do well in school in part because they are also stimulated outside of school, e.g., by having highly literate parents, lots of books, educational family activities and a strong work ethic.
