Yes. Banneker - 81.1% Black .2% White 14% Latino 1.8% Asian 2.2% Multi-racial Keep in mind that Banneker, like SWW High school, can send students who don't maintain a minimum GPA back to their neighborhood schools. |

The drop at Wilson is bad. I suspect some of it is kids not taking the test and kids not caring about the test. Also, didn't they made Seniors take the Geometry test last year if they hadn't taken it before -- even if they took Geometry at years prior? But that may not explain it all.
But the focus on Wilson ignores the fact that other high schools are still scoring 0% on the math portion. It doesn't matter where your kids go to school, that is alarming when you look at education in DC. |

Looking at the leading Capitol Hill-area elementary schools (% Language Arts, Math at or above proficiency standard):
SWS 66/63 Brent 61/61 Maury 44/44 Ludlow Taylor 42/40 Two Rivers 43/40 Watkins 30/39 Jo Wilson 24/35 This is pretty consistent with recent years and not surprising based purely on SES levels in the testing grades at each school. Interesting that Maury and Ludlow Taylor are essentially the same at this point. Two Rivers and Watkins are also in the same general range as Maury and LT. |
I really don't put too much weight into the test since my smart, white, high SES kids tend to do poorly (sorry Wilson and Deal). But like you I am shocked at scores of the other high schools. Eastern I actually had hopes for. Tech, horrible. Then you look at the ones they sunk hundreds of millions of dollars renovating -- pathetic. Truly pathetic that those teachers are allowed to continue to work for DCPS. |
Sorry, but what do the two numbers here represent? Is it last year compared to this year's data? As in, last year, SWS had 66%, and this year 63% meeting expectations? |
|
PP, numbers represent the % Language Arts, Math at or above proficiency standard, for 2015-2016 school year. In other words, first number is percent meeting or exceeding English standard, second number is percent meeting or exceeding math standard, for this most recent school year.

Not only they can, but they do. The "out" rates are astonishingly high (just looked at enrollment data a few weeks ago) |
I don't think these scores bear out that Watkins is in the same range as 2R/LT/Maury in ELA; a 12-14 point difference is pretty huge. Like, Watkins is actually closer to JO Wilson than Maury on BOTH measures. SWS comes in at 66/63, so it's basically in T1 with Brent. Logan (35/34) comes out basically the same as Watkins, so a bit worse than I expected. |
Never heard of the expression "political patronage"? |
Ah, got it. Thank you! |
Yikes, Maury is diverse enough to report both AA and white scores independently, and white comes in at 78/78 and AA comes in at 18/16. That is horrifying. (Compare that to, e.g., the Brent numbers which are 72/74 and 44/37, respectively; or L-T, which is 39/35 for AA; or even JO Wilson, which is 23/34 for AA. |
I'm surprised that Two Rivers scores aren't higher, given its popularity. Interesting also that LT's scores are so similar to Maury's, yet LT has fewer (but growing each year) number of wealthy kids in the testing grades and is still a Title One school. Go LT! |
| Why are the grade 3 ELA scores at some of the traditionally high performing schools so much lower compared to the other grades? |
Why is Two Rivers listed as a Cap Hill school? It's not located on Cap Hill and it's a charter school. Please don't misrepresent the data. |
