PARCC test results - slight increase in scores overall, white students see drop, Wilson plunges

I forgot to add that we also looked at McKinley Tech but my son rejected it because of
Tough commute from Tenley. I'm surprised how no one ever mentions
McKinley Tech on these forums. For kids interested in Science and Math,
It is a very good option. Go visit the school, ask for a tour and actually spend time
In a class or two - you will be pleasantly surprised.

Wilson is a bit crazy for 9th grade. Overcrowded and my kid seems to have bad to mediocre
teachers. Hope 10th grade is an improvement.

McKinley scored 10% proficient in math. That seems pathetically low for a technology application-only school, doesn't it?

All the black families who don't send their kids there, I need to ask, are they Racists?

What's happened to Tubman? Why are the scores so low? The scores dipped the year after Harry Hughes left.

Wow. Couldn't believe it, checked it...and you're right.

Is that really true for 11th and 12th grades at McKinley Tech?
9th grade scores might reflect the middle schools more than McKinley
Tech HS but by 11th and 12th grades, McKinley does not have any real excuse -
Cannot blame it on middle school prep.

No way to know - at least based on PARCC.

PARCC tests yearly from 3-8 and then only once for ELA in high school (10th grade) and whenever the studetn is taking Geometry.

Eventually one could find AP exam results and SAT scores for McKinley but what's publicly released always lags by at least a couple years.

Ellington's scores are awful too.

2016 39% ELA/9% Math

2015 50% ELA/3% Math

Yes, but we already knew that. I had a more positive view of McKinley.

There is no connection between McKinley MS and McKinley HS. McKinley HS is an application school, so presumably, the kids come from all across DC.

There is a big difference between a performing arts school and a school that purports to be STEM. You would expect the STEM school to score a little better in math. I don't have the same expectation of a performing arts school.

And I've been to enough Ellington music and drama performances to know that those kids are well-trained in their discipline. But arts is a tough field and they need some academic skills too.

Exactly. Above all, Ellington is a high school. And those scores are unacceptable. Still, I expected more of McKinley. I knew it was no TJ, but thought of it as a competitive, high performing program. No more.

For the following reasons:

1) we live very close to Wilson.
2) Was not too excited that almost all kids are AA and more
girls than boys.
3) Sat scores and college acceptances are worse than Wilson. Very impressive though that
almost all kids graduate and go on to some college from Banneker.
4) Banneker is scheduled to be renovated shortly which means that two of his years there would be
spent at a holding school.
5) not many options for sports

He also rejected SWW for being too small, bad open house, principal seemed annoying and arrogant, and the fact that he felt
most annoying kids from Deal (in his opinion) were planning on going there.
I'm not sure about colleage acceptance rate, but everything I have ever heard or read about Banneker states 100% or close to it for college acceptance rate. Can you please share a link to where you got your information? Also, it's not true that the SAT scores for Banneker are worse than Banneker. They are pretty much the same except Banneker comes out slightly ahead of Wilson. Here is a link:

I think all your points are valid I just wanted to point out that couple of discrepancies.

Banneker kids get into college but very few get into top schools.
A lot of them go to HBCU which are not of particular interest to white kids.

I'm worried we might be confusing McKinley Tech scores with McKinley middle school.
As someone pointed out, these schools are entirely separate.
Geometry scores may well be from the middle school and not from McKinley Tech.
