Are you equating South Carolina with the Confederate Flag?

A Confederate flag flies over the South Carolina statehouse. They began flying it in 1962 as a direct response to the Civil Rights movement.

It's still there.

Crazy people can be intelligent and excellent planners. Mental illness is just not the irrational, mumbling homeless people you see wondering the D.C. streets.
Mental illness is an insidious, awful thing that is manifested in myriad ways.

Crazy comes in degrees. I am sure most people have some degree of crazy. Stop making excuses for this criminal. He wasn't too crazy to not know what he was doing was wrong. He disguised himself and possibly wore body armor to protect himself.

Not PP, but how is saying he's crazy an excuse? There is no excuse. But to perpetrate something like this, you must have issues. You just have to. Doesn't mean you are incapable of planning and executing the plan.

Thanks - I am the one to whom pp was responding. I don't understand when people say calling someone crazy is excusing their actions. That is dumb as hell. Crazy or sane, if you are dangerous you need to be locked up somewhere. How is that excusing anything? This right here is how and why we have broken mental health system in this country, we think identifying and understanding mental illness is excusing it. Stupid.

If you want people to accept mental illness as an excuse, then you have to accept it for all groups of people. It is always an excuse for whites, but other racial groups are automatically assumed criminal without any regards to their mental state. Now, that's dumb as hell.

Google "navy yard shooter mental illness". I think people label mass killings as mental illness when there are signs of mental illness.

More than one person told you that mental illness is not an excuse. Yet you continue to pander about your own delusions. Can't you read?

I misspoke. Not the state flag, but the flag that flies over the South Carolina State House:

He probably had some crazy belief that the pastor or someone in the church or maybe black people were putting voices in his head. I doubt it was a functioning normal person who was just committing a hate crime.

And the excuses and rationalizing begins. White mass killer equals mental illness. Hispanic mass killer equals cartel gang member. Black mass killer equals thug. Asian mass killer equals ?, I don't know, what were the excuses for the Virginia Tech shooter. SMH

Sorry if I am not making it all about race for you. As I said, the person is likely mentally ill and his delusions centered around either someone in the church or black people. His comments about race, that he told one of the victims, sound very paranoid. And for the record, mental illness effects all races.

See -- you got it all wrong. Yes, he is crazy. Yes he was spewing racist garbage which is likely a manifestation of his craziness. Yes, the media and very much society paints alleged black criminals very differently than white ones. This guy and other mentally ill white folk get to be the crazy that they are, black folks are usually just "thugs".
This society has many ills, one does not cancel out the other. One just makes the other worse. Get a clue!

Not those PPs. Right. Several people on this thread and others have pointed out that mass killings are portrayed in the media as mentally ill white guys while other races are portrayed as thugs and criminals. I've got that clue. Where I'm a bit behind, though, is that mass shooters all seem to actually be mentally ill white guys.

The along Island Railway mass killer was not white, nor were the Beltway serial killers, Mohammed and Malvo.

Right, but that's so outside the norm that during the sniper attacks, everyone was on the lookout for a white guy.

I don't think saying this guy was mentally ill is an "excuse." It's reality. The man didn't just walk in shooting up the place because black people were in it. He sat in that church for an HOUR watching these people and somehow still didn't fundamentally get that they are PEOPLE. How can a person even think about doing that if they aren't mentally ill? It's just too f*cked up. I would say the same if he were black and did this to a church full of white people. If the man in the latter scenario is described by the media or whoever as a "thug," that still doesn't change the FACT that he is in all probability mentally ill.

Actually, he chose that church to shoot up because it was predominantly Black. He knew they were people. He didn't care. Stop making excuses. Do you think Wade Page was mentally ill? Remember him? Page shot up a Sikh Mosque about three years ago in Wisconsin, killing six or seven people. He too knew they were people. He didn't care. In both cases it was about hate.

In the picture, his jacket has patches showing the Apartheid-era South African flag and the Rhodesian flag. This guy seems to have all kinds of race issues.

So, wait, the killer is African-American? Or just African? Or an American who yearns for colonial Africa?

A White American too young to even remember apartheid, who yearns for an era when Black folks knew their place. I will bet all the money that his bedroom had a Confederate battle flag tacked to the wall above his bed. Can't you just see it?

He could just have the South Carolina state flag.

Wow. What a racist thing to say....

Racist against South Carolinians? Or just their government, who continues to fly a Confederate flag over the state house?

Yes. To DC liberals who consider themselves smarter and morally superior to the average human being, the flags are one and the same. And all southerners are racists.

Why should he be? The entire white race does not go around shooting up churches-this guy is an anomaaly-a crazy, gun toting, sociopathic anomaly!

Not saying he should merely making note of the contrast between the media's perception/depiction of a white guy who kills someone (sociopathic anomaly) and a non-white person who kills someone (typical black thug or common Hispanic gang-banger). When non-whites commit atrocities it's a reflection on ALL of them whereas when whites that commit atrocities its not portrayed as such.

And if the perp here were Muslim, you just KNOW he'd be immediately typecast as a "terrorist" and not a lone mentally ill guy. There is an absolute double standard when it comes to white violent criminals, and others.

Bingo

It would depend on how the act was committed. Did the Muslim scream Allahu Akbar prior? Was he known to others as radicalized? I'm a conservative and I do believe this Charleston shooting was a hate crime and that the kid was identifying with a group like the Klan. A lot of radicalized Muslims are also 'lone wolves' especially ones in this country. They are influenced by terrorist organizations but might not have a hard link, i.e. are a formal member of ISIS. ISIS is, in fact, calling for 'lone wolves' in the States.

The klan is the oldest terrorist organization in the US. If, as you say, he is affiliated with the klan, then his cowardly act is, indeed, terrorism.

I am the PP and I 100% agree.

this is BS, you look at the facts. a person killing scores of strangers is likely mentally ill and not a criminal. a criminal kills for a reason, does not go into an elementary school to kill first graders, goes into a bank to rob it and may kill if is convenient. plenty of white organized crime (mafia and so on) made multiple killings and nobody thought they were crazy. a latino going to a movie theather and shooting spectators is liekly mental ilness, a latino killling members of a rival gang over a drug deal is not mental ilness, like no mental ilness is likely involved when gangs of white bikers face each others with guns. Timothy McVeigh killed scores of strangers and was white, he was executed and certainly he was considered a criminal and terrorist, not crazy. the Virignia Tech shooter was Asia and the circumstances of the shooting made clear is was insane. I am not aware of a mass shooting of random strangers made by a single black male. even in the case of the Savopoulos killings, people said that while the guy is a criminal (and his record proves it), there might be some level of mental ilness involved because simply you do not kill and torture in such a cruel and unnecessary manner unless you are not totaly sane, even if he was aware of what he was dling.

I do not agree that it's BS. I bet it will come out that he was mentally ill and there were lots of obvious signs of it. Our mental health care system appears broken.

What do you suggest? Do you think we should lock them back up and force feed them their meds. If they are anything like my schizophrenic BIL they take their meds when they want, or not. But, to my knowledge, BIL,has not killed anyone, more less nine people.

Please. Do you really think the yahoo who keeps posting this garbage is actually an educated person who knows that there is a black SC senator (let alone his name)?

Horrible. The mass shootings come like clockwork in this country.

Cue the NRA to suggest that priests and pastors pack heat in the pulpit.

We're saying that Roof is racist because of patches on his jacket, but that the SC government is not racist, irrespective of the flag they fly over their State House.
