In the picture, his jacket has patches showing the Apartheid-era South African flag and the Rhodesian flag. This guy seems to have all kinds of race issues.

So, wait, the killer is African-American? Or just African? Or an American who yearns for colonial Africa?

A White American too young to even remember apartheid, who yearns for an era when Black folks knew their place. I will bet all the money that his bedroom had a Confederate battle flag tacked to the wall above his bed. Can't you just see it?

That is not an excuse -- dude sounds crazy, VA tech dude was crazy. Just because institutionalized racism exists and paints alleged black criminals as typical of all black people does not make any of these other nuts any less crazy. The two things are not mutually exclusive. I am a black woman who very clearly sees racism and crazy ALL AT THE SAME DAMN TIME.

The suspects comments to a witness seem to clearly indicate this was a racist attack.
You can be crazy and racist. Why is this impossible to see?

He could just have the South Carolina state flag.

surely someone knows where this murderous terrorist is!

finally confirmed and ID'd.

Are they sure it is the right person? It would be terrible to make a mistake and target an innocent look-alike.

i love how everyone wants to be absolutely sure of the white terrorist when police will walk up and fire upon a 13 year old black boy on sight.

Huh? Are you the same person who keeps spouting off about how all criminals are crazy so we shouldn't call them "thugs", how police officers are bad, and how all white people are dysfunctional? You sound unhinged.

I haven't read those posts. Which ones are you referencing. Or, are you just projecting?

SPLC website would suggest this is likely. These groups/ issues tend to be connected.

Everywhere should be safe -EVERY.FREAKING.WHERE.
And I do not think the pp bringing up the NRA is wrong. There needs to be a change in the conversation, a shift in the paradigm when it comes to gun violence in this country. ENOUGH IS FREAKING ENOUGH! Dollars to donuts this nut probably was licensed to have a gun. WE NEED TO MAKE IT NEAR TO IMPOSSIBLE TO GET GUNS!
BACKGROUND CHECKS
TRAINING
LIMITS ON TYPES OF GUNS AVAVAILABLE TO LICENSED OWNERS

signed,

a responsible gun owner

That worked really well in DC. Get a grip.

It can't work in DC because all you have to do is cross the river and you can buy any kind of weapon you want in Virgina. And yes, I know this for a fact. My husband is a gun nut. I mean, my husband loves his assortment of guns. He also knows someone who bought a damn bazooka gun at one of those gun fairs. No background checks required. Now what does one do with a bazooka gun

Funny how almost none of this gun crime happens in Virginia, though. But we won't talk about that...carry on.

Furthermore, if just one of the individuals in that church was carrying a concealed weapon, there might not have been 9 fatalities.

WWJD? Do you think he would be pleased and tell people to come strapped into his house to worship and praise

He apparently re-loaded multiple times. You can bring up JC all you want - if someone was carrying this would have ended faster.

He probably identifies with those historical groups even though they no longer exist.

I believe the excuse was that his parents pushed him too hard. Seriously.

Actually, the Virginia Tech Shooter had a history of mental illness and was treated by one of Virginia's county clinics. His parents sent him off to college and hoped for the best, but he went off his meds and the rest is history.

And his parents tried to get him help multiple times. So sad, really.

this is BS, you look at the facts. a person killing scores of strangers is likely mentally ill and not a criminal. a criminal kills for a reason, does not go into an elementary school to kill first graders, goes into a bank to rob it and may kill if is convenient. plenty of white organized crime (mafia and so on) made multiple killings and nobody thought they were crazy. a latino going to a movie theather and shooting spectators is liekly mental ilness, a latino killling members of a rival gang over a drug deal is not mental ilness, like no mental ilness is likely involved when gangs of white bikers face each others with guns. Timothy McVeigh killed scores of strangers and was white, he was executed and certainly he was considered a criminal and terrorist, not crazy. the Virignia Tech shooter was Asia and the circumstances of the shooting made clear is was insane. I am not aware of a mass shooting of random strangers made by a single black male. even in the case of the Savopoulos killings, people said that while the guy is a criminal (and his record proves it), there might be some level of mental ilness involved because simply you do not kill and torture in such a cruel and unnecessary manner unless you are not totaly sane, even if he was aware of what he was dling.

I do not agree that it's BS. I bet it will come out that he was mentally ill and there were lots of obvious signs of it. Our mental health care system appears broken.

Sorry if I am not making it all about race for you. As I said, the person is likely mentally ill and his delusions centered around either someone in the church or black people. His comments about race, that he told one of the victims, sound very paranoid. And for the record, mental illness effects all races.

Yet, on FB, he has multiple black friends. Curiouser and curiouser.

What kind of comment is that about " just having the South Carolina flag " ??
Are you equating South Carolina with the Confederate Flag?

Yes. I'm hopeful that we can all agree that a young man wearing white supremacist gear, assassinating an elected official in the South's oldest Black church is, in fact, engaging in racist terrorism.

The elected official was also an activist who stood with HRC that day, speaking about race and the police. I can imagine that could be a trigger for someone like this.

ahhhh here comes the "he got black friends though" comments. i noticed that on his friends list too. lets just keep excusing this down to a mental illness cause only the ones commenting about this having to do with race are the silly ones.

we all know racism ended with the passage of the civil rights act. in one fell swoop racism went away when a bill was signed. how magical.

A Confederate flag flies over the South Carolina statehouse. They began flying it in 1962 as a direct response to the Civil Rights movement.
