Eight People Shot in Black Church in Charleston, South Carolina

Anonymous
I understand that the flag flies - I completely disagree with the fact that it flies and I am a South Carolinian. I think the horrific acts of last night would be denounced by all reasonable people - whether we live in a state that flies that flag or not. I think Jeff should be ashamed for posting something that seems to indicate that people in SC are racists.

And the excuses and rationalizing begins. White mass killer equals mental illness. Hispanic mass killer equals cartel gang member. Black mass killer equals thug. Asian mass killer equals ?, I don't know, what were the excuses for the Virginia Tech shooter. SMH

Sorry if I am not making it all about race for you. As I said, the person is likely mentally ill and his delusions centered around either someone in the church or black people. His comments about race, that he told one of the victims, sound very paranoid. And for the record, mental illness effects all races.

See -- you got it all wrong. Yes, he is crazy. Yes he was spewing racist garbage which is likely a manifestation of his craziness. Yes, the media and very much society paints alleged black criminals very differently than white ones. This guy and other mentally ill white folk get to be the crazy that they are, black folks are usually just "thugs".
This society has many ills, one does not cancel out the other. One just makes the other worse. Get a clue!

Not those PPs. Right. Several people on this thread and others have pointed out that mass killings are portrayed in the media as mentally ill white guys while other races are portrayed as thugs and criminals. I've got that clue. Where I'm a bit behind, though, is that mass shooters all seem to actually be mentally ill white guys.

The along Island Railway mass killer was not white, nor were the Beltway serial killers, Mohammed and Malvo.

Right, but that's so outside the norm that during the sniper attacks, everyone was on the lookout for a white guy.

I don't think saying this guy was mentally ill is an "excuse." It's reality. The man didn't just walk in shooting up the place because black people were in it. He sat in that church for an HOUR watching these people and somehow still didn't fundamentally get that they are PEOPLE. How can a person even think about doing that if they aren't mentally ill? It's just too f*cked up. I would say the same if he were black and did this to a church full of white people. If the man in the latter scenario is described by the media or whoever as a "thug," that still doesn't change the FACT that he is in all probability mentally ill.

Actually, he chose that church to shoot up because it was predominantly Black. He knew they were people. He didn't care. Stop making excuses. Do you think Wade Page was mentally ill? Remember him? Page shot up a Sikh Mosque about three years ago in Wisconsin, killing six or seven people. He too knew they were people. He didn't care. In both cases it was about hate.

Yes, I understand that. NO ONE IS MAKING EXCUSES. Please understand, you can be both mentally ill AND racist. This was clearly motivated by his racism. He ALSO is in all likelihood mentally ill. My point was, it is so fundamentally f*cked up to sit there in a prayer meeting with a group of human beings for an hour and then take them out one by one. That in itself is probably proof that he is mentally ill.

In the picture, his jacket has patches showing the Apartheid-era South African flag and the Rhodesian flag. This guy seems to have all kinds of race issues.

So, wait, the killer is African-American? Or just African? Or an American who yearns for colonial Africa?

A White American too young to even remember apartheid, who yearns for an era when Black folks knew their place. I will bet all the money that his bedroom had a Confederate battle flag tacked to the wall above his bed. Can't you just see it?

He could just have the South Carolina state flag.

Wow. What a racist thing to say....

Racist against South Carolinians? Or just their government, who continues to fly a Confederate flag over the state house?

Can you give me indications that the state of SC is racist? Remember who they elected as a Senator....

We're saying that Roof is racist because of patches on his jacket, but that the SC government is not racist, irrespective of the flag they fly over their State House.

Roof appears to be quite racist.

Mental illness is an insidious, awful thing that is manifested in myriad ways.

Crazy comes in degrees. I am sure most people have some degree of crazy. Stop making excuses for this criminal. He wasn't too crazy to not know what he was doing was wrong. He disguised himself and possibly wore body armor to protect himself.

Not PP, but how is saying he's crazy an excuse? There is no excuse. But to perpetrate something like this, you must have issues. You just have to. Doesn't mean you are incapable of planning and executing the plan.

Thanks - I am the one to whom pp was responding. I don't understand when people say calling someone crazy is excusing their actions. That is dumb as hell. Crazy or sane, if you are dangerous you need to be locked up somewhere. How is that excusing anything? This right here is how and why we have broken mental health system in this country, we think identifying and understanding mental illness is excusing it. Stupid.

If you want people to accept mental illness as an excuse, then you have to accept it for all groups of people. It is always an excuse for whites, but other racial groups are automatically assumed criminal without any regards to their mental state. Now, that's dumb as hell.

More than one person told you that mental illness is not an excuse. Yet you continue to pander about your own delusions. Can't you read?

Then stop using it as an excuse, reason, or validation. He is a mass murderer. A thug. A criminal. A monster. There are plenty of people with mental illnesses of varying degrees and they are not murderes, thugs, monsters.

Here is the church's website: http://www.emanuelamechurch.org

It has a "donate" button.

DC "intellectuals" equate the flag with racism and refuse to see it any other way. When called on the same for the Union flag, they get offended and forgetful of highschool history and contemporary events. This makes their made-up Universe a bit less comfortable to live with, I suppose

In fact, his racism can be a manifestation of his mental illness if he is paranoid schizophrenic.

His ability to sit in a room for an hour, shoot, methodically reload, and shoot again, tells me he's evil.

Turns out he is more enamored of the flags of Rhodesia and apartheid South Africa so we can stop debating the Confederate flag right now.

Repeat: you've been told many times by several people that it is NOT an excuse, and no one is using it as an excuse. What language do you understand better? I may be able to relay it to you better.

Yes. You can rightfully call him all of these things. Why does it bother you so much that he also is clearly mentally ill?

I don't think you followed the discussion closely. Roof is pictured wearing patches of the Apartheid-era South Africa and Rhodesian flags. A poster suggested that he probably had a Confederate battle flag in his bedroom. I simply pointed out that he just needed the flag that flies over the State Capital. If that makes South Carolinians look racist, they should blame their government, not me.

Google "navy yard shooter mental illness". I think people label mass killings as mental illness when there are signs of mental illness.

As I sat on the Navy Yard with others waiting, waiting, and waiting for information, the first excuses/ explanations that came out of CNN, FOX, and others were work place violence shooting. Alexis mental illness did not come into question until later., upon further investigation. The difference is that DCUM posters were labeling this young white male mentally ill before acquiring any information. All DCUM posters had was a fuzzy face from a surveillance camera. And from there , they surmised mental illness based on nothing more.

Just gross.

The state elected Tim Scott, one of the finest Freshman Senators out there. Good, good man.

The type of behavior you are exhibiting here is troll-like and self-serving.
