As someone who has worked in psychiatric hospitals for many years with many forensic cases, I would bet this guy is mentally ill. He looks around the age that most seriously mentally ill people have their first psychotic break. He probably had some crazy belief that the pastor or someone in the church or maybe black people were putting voices in his head. I doubt it was a functioning normal person who was just committing a hate crime.
And the excuses and rationalizing begins. White mass killer equals mental illness. Hispanic mass killer equals cartel gang member. Black mass killer equals thug. Asian mass killer equals ?, I don't know, what were the excuses for the Virginia Tech shooter. SMH
Sorry if I am not making it all about race for you. As I said, the person is likely mentally ill and his delusions centered around either someone in the church or black people. His comments about race, that he told one of the victims, sound very paranoid. And for the record, mental illness effects all races.
See -- you got it all wrong. Yes, he is crazy. Yes he was spewing racist garbage which is likely a manifestation of his craziness. Yes, the media and very much society paints alleged black criminals very differently than white ones. This guy and other mentally ill white folk get to be the crazy that they are, black folks are usually just "thugs". This society has many ills, one does not cancel out the other. One just makes the other worse. Get a clue!
Not those PPs. Right. Several people on this thread and others have pointed out that mass killings are portrayed in the media as mentally ill white guys while other races are portrayed as thugs and criminals. I've got that clue. Where I'm a bit behind, though, is that mass shooters all seem to actually be mentally ill white guys.
The along Island Railway mass killer was not white, nor were the Beltway serial killers, Mohammed and Malvo.
Right, but that's so outside the norm that during the sniper attacks, everyone was on the lookout for a white guy. I don't think saying this guy was mentally ill is an "excuse." It's reality. The man didn't just walk in shooting up the place because black people were in it. He sat in that church for an HOUR watching these people and somehow still didn't fundamentally get that they are PEOPLE. How can a person even think about doing that if they aren't mentally ill? It's just too f*cked up. I would say the same if he were black and did this to a church full of white people. If the man in the latter scenario is described by the media or whoever as a "thug," that still doesn't change the FACT that he is in all probability mentally ill.
Actually, he chose that church to shoot up because it was predominantly Black. He knew they were people. He didn't care. Stop making excuses. Do you think Wade Page was mentally ill? Remember him? Page shot up a Sikh Mosque about three years ago in Wisconsin, killing six or seven people. He too knew they were people. He didn't care. In both cases it was about hate.
