Yeah, I would say crime is really bad in DC and on the Metro.

Yep. I have 2 friends who used to use metro in the past to commute, but when things started to get worse they are driving. One of them attempted to use the Metro with RTO and had been confronted by what you describe on the first day.. entitled teenagers acting “thuggy” trying to start a confrontation.

I don’t even know how to address this, it’s a culture that’s been created over the past few years that changed the behaviors. Exact same happened in NYC with mentally ill and thugs assaulting people and pushing them into subway tracks and down stairs for no reason. Now there is police on every platform.

The Metro needs to have the police presence it had after 9/11 for 5-10 years until things get much safer. I’m talking about cops with bullet proof vests and M-16s, not security guards with reflective vests. We need to make the Metro safe to ride again so more people will ride it.

Yes, unfortunately you need enforcement of all laws constantly. Which requires a well staffed well trained police force… but they have huge shortages. Buses in the area say “fare required”, but what they mean is “law abiding hard working people must pay, and more every year”, while everyone who feels “thuggy”, or is otherwise unwilling or unable can ride for free all day long, getting into paying customers’ faces, because we will do NOTHING. Now this might happen on an isolated line in the middle of the night in other parts of the world, too, but here it is expected, and in broad daylight.

What exactly do you want Metro to do? Bus drivers are not law enforcement nor should they be expected to be. At any given time there are hundreds of buses on the road and it would be completely unfeasible to have a police officer aboard every one. Not to mention you'd be the first to complain if they did and your fare went up a single cent.

The same way we enforce literally any other crime - the fear of being caught and prosecuted needs to be high enough to deter bad behavior. That means arresting a small number of people to use as examples.

MTPD has been conducting high-profile fare enforcement initiatives for like a year now. What a surprise, a paranoid crime junkie is completely misinformed yet still spouting off at the mouth like they've got a clue.

Also, NOTHING Trump has said indicates that he's going to do something useful like improve fare enforcement.

Students who live and go to school in DC ride free. So who are the fare jumpers?

I’ll give you one guess.

Will be happy to be very wrong but I suspect that his highly divisive politics and dumb economic policies will lead to a new surge in crime …

“A year-end analysis of violent crime in the District shows the rate of violent incidents is at a 30-year low. According to a presentation from the U.S. Attorney's Office, violent crime overall has dropped 35% over last year, from 5,215 incidents in 2023 to 3,388 so far in 2024. Homicide is down 30%”

Liar.

It is a lie that crime is at a 30 year low.

It’s next to impossible to report a crime as the police are spread so thin. I have had guys working on my house robbed by gun point, had neighborhood guy try to attack me with a pipe, had multiple break ins and a real estate title company steal money from me. I was not able to report any of the physical crimes as officers never showed up when called, even though a gun was discharged in the construction worker robbery. It took me 10 months to get a return call from the Detective in the financial crimes division and he told me now that they know the person that stole the money from me did it to multiple people they were going to pursue arresting her, but he was retiring in 3 weeks and had 2 weeks of vacation he had to use up, so if they didn’t locate her in that week nothing would happen and that the other two detectives in the unit are dealing with 350 calls a day and would likely not have time to pursue it. She stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from people doing real estate closings.

LOL. You don’t care about financial crime. Be real. MAGA doesn’t care, unless it’s not MAGA.

Not. One. Single. Homicide. Since. Trump.
And DEMOCRATS are MAD as HELL.

Why?

Of course this is great news. I’m not sure if we’ve had a period of 5-7 days that were homicide free because I don’t follow daily crime statistics.

My question is: is it worth it to spend $365M annually for this. The diversion of funds from cancer research and regulatory cuts and natural disasters to fund the military and police will also cause deaths, which are also deeply unfortunate. How do you square the two?

Why did the BBB cut so much from police budgets and why did the GOP vote down DC’s own tax money which cut into police budgets again as well as schooling and other services that reduce crime?

It doesn’t make a lot of sense and hasn’t been explained to public at all except for scare tactics. If Trump addressed all of this in a coherent, strategic plan I would feel more assured that this wasn’t an authoritarian power grab and merely about optics.

Huh? DC did not have a single homicide for 16 straight days in March of this year.

If you were a thug, you’d know still kind of cold in March to be shooting off on the streets.

Car jackings should be down since they been handing out ten year sentences. That is a long time for stealing cars.
