Wasn’t there a story about a republican operation to encourage them to come to cause a “crisis”? Wasn’t that part of the “caravan” drama around the last attempted coup/transition?

No, there wasn’t. Please answer the question.
What’s the purpose of the current situation at our border?

I'll let you into a little secret: Republicans don't want to solve the immigration problem. It's one of their signature issues. It whips up their base every time. It would make zero sense politically to try to solve the problem. They just like tough optics and tough talk on the subject from the likes of Trump and others.

Yep. Especially since they finally got a Supreme Court abortion win. That was their best, most powerful wedge issue for decades - with that win, they risked losing half their base. So they need something to keep their base excited- immigration is the new abortion. Make it scary!

Illegal entry into the US is scary. And, hundreds of thousands of citizens are dying as a result of it.

Hundreds of thousands of citizens are dying? Do you have a citation for that? Because even if you were referring to fentanyl overdoses, a lot of the fentanyl is being smuggled in right through the ports, as opposed to the border.

Some is coming through ports. The majority that is interdicted comes through the ports.
But, a $hitload is still coming in. And, since it is coming in undetected, we aren't really sure WHERE it is coming in. The bottom line is... it is coming in illegally from Mexico.
And, the cartels have a plan for getting it through..... they flood the border with wave after wave of migrants..... directing them to cross at places where THEY allow (not at ports of entry) so that the US has to pull resources from border patrolling and pulling resources from border entry inspection so that they can send migrants carrying contraband - like fentanyl - across where there is nobody to catch them. Many get through.

This is exactly what authorities from CBP have testified to.

So let them come, I say.

These people are paying the cartels to help them get to the border. Meanwhile, the "gotaways" are thousands and thousands. Drugs, human trafficking, etc.

Everyone talks about "immigration reform." I wish someone would explain how that can occur as long as thousands are flowing in daily--some are valid asylum seekers, but not most.

Would someone on here lay out what "immigration reform" looks like? The only thing i have seen is to give Dreamers citizenship. That is only a small piece of the problem.

DP. Everyone who seeks asylum is permitted to stay until a judge decides their case, which takes years. If we changed that, or vastly sped up the process, we wouldn’t have as many migrants/asylees here. People would be less likely to pay cartels to get them here if they were deported a week later. People would be less likely to walk to the US from Central America if they would be deported quickly.

The political parties exploit migrants for their own purposes, and I’m tired of it. I wish they f-ing fix it, or shut up about it.

The bolded part is correct, and neither side will do anything particularly meaningful.

No, dear. One side has continued to try to address it but the GOP loves firing up their idiot base.

Tell us exactly how Democrats have tried to do anything to address it. Because what we have seen in the last two years is specific actions and rhetoric to ENCOURAGE the flow of illegal migrants. Nothing Biden has done has been an effort to stop the flow. Nothing.

That was a lie started by the Democrats to try to cast blame away from this administration. It is totally false.

For the cartels... it is about making money. They have no value for human life so all are expendable.
For Biden.... it's about gaining future votes for his party.

Other than right to life/abortion issue is anyone else approaching the next presidential election as a single issue voter ?

If other than right to life/abortion, what is that issue ?

Not that issue. It’s a concern for sure, but I’m more about equality, environment, accessibility to education and healthcare.

Don’t worry. Between the employers who don’t pay well, the mass shootings, the cost of housing, and fascism gaining popularity, we’re not such a desirable place to live anymore.

Anonymous wrote:OP-tons of illegal immigrants come legally and overstay their visa. Neither party *really* has come up with any solutions for the border crisis. The well off in both parties look away at the companies that hire undocumented workers because it's all about the $$$. So what solutions do you propose?

Removing birth citizenship and going with citizenship like most sane developed 1st world countries have.

Not allowing undocumented children into schools

E-verify for all labor.

Extraordinarily high fines for people who rent to undocumented immigrants/require.proof of citizenship or legal stay to be able to rent

Require citizenship or legal residence proof for all utilities.

Remove the ability to obtain a driver's license without proof of legal residence or citizenship

Disallow all banking without proof of citizenship or legal residency

It's simple really. When you make it difficult to live in the country illegally, people will stop coming. Who is going to come to the US to live illegally if you can't drive, can't live anywhere, can't turn on the lights, cannot use banking when society keeps moving to cashless transactions, and you cannot send your kids to schools?

Make life impossible.

So why do you think Republicans have not done any of these when in power?

This may shock you, but I actually do agree with the Democratic talking point that greedy business owners who want to pay below fair wages for fair labor are a big part of the problem. YES, please require E-verify for all employers.

At the same time, however, Democrats have no leg to stand on when they do crap like give driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants, create sanctuary cities, kowtow to the needs of undocumented kids in schools and teach them in their language, and offer them healthcare. It just encourages lawlessness and people to keep on coming.

Life needs to be impossible/unlivable for all person who enter illegally. No one will come if life is impossible. All pols in Congress and at state and local levels are responsible for this fiasco. Implement the ideas on that list and watch illegal immigration plummet to zero. No one wants to move to the US of they can't legally rent an apartment and cannot turn on the electric.

Millions of them work here, propping up hundreds of thousands of businesses. They work in meat packing, farming, construction, restaurants and many other sectors. They pay their bills. They live peacefully. WHY do we not want to just give them work visas? That would eliminate a huge amount of the problems at the border and in enforcement, it would eliminate massive backlogs of hearings, and would allow CBP to actually focus on securing the border and focus on going after just the ones who AREN'T living here peacefully, like the MS-13 and cartel members, and so on. Unemployment is at a historic low, we haven't seen since the 1960s, so it wouldn't harm American workers. Visas would be tied to demand, with American citizens given right of first refusal for any job filled by visa.

WHY do we not do any common sense things like this?

Not PP - if we don't enforce any laws we have in place or any new laws, employers will just look past the documented workers and hire from the long line of undocumented.

Maybe if you had different sources of information, you would understand why the bolded is patently false.

First, the flow is because people feel the need to flee their own countries, so the US sending money to the Triangle Area etc is an attempt to stem the flow. The Biden Administration also got Mexico to invest over a billion dollars of its money into border security: https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-biden-immigration-climate-and-environment-120f8a3fc440e3b2cccce6100e65b912

Seriously, this is an issue that can and should be addressed with legislation. In 2011, the US Senate passed a bill that Obama said he would sign. Guess what happened? Then Speaker Paul Ryan refused to bring it to the House floor for a vote (that would have passed) because he wanted it as a cudgel issue for the 2012 election cycle. Fox ran wit it and it has been a wedge issue making people like you really angry for the past decade.

Ask yourself, why does the GOP continually decline problem solving to force the OP to create a thread like this? Why won't the GOP offer legislation tat actually helps people and solve problems? Why is it always on the Democrats to pass meaningful legislation, offer bills that address the debt and deficit while the GOP engages in stoking anger and divisiveness while gaslighting their supporters into believing the opposite?

Yes - I remember this - and there were Trump associates who flew south right before it started, and the caravans were given maps and instructions and there were clear signs that the caravans were intentionally organized to maximize the humanitarian disaster aspect of it all.
