Throwing out that I’ve Had a lot more luck removing all sugar than doing 25grams. I still get cravings if I’m eating some. Can I ask why 25 grams?

I like sugar too much to say zero and it won’t work for me long term. But if that works for you, it’s clearly the best thing. Sugar is nutritionally devoid of value. The less than 25g recommendation is from the American Heart Association. It’s about half what the government recommends.

I cut way back, but I can't imagine never eating any bread, a square of dark chocolate, a Kind bar, a lightly flavored yogurt, a quarter teaspoon of raw sugar on my oatmeal, a little whipped cream on my espresso etc. Daily, I keep it between 15 and 20g, but I feel miserable and deprived with nothing. I lost 40+ pounds, have kept it off and never needed to go to 0 sugar.

But I cant touch the Thin Mints or M&Ms if they're in the house. That would set off cravings. (I still get peanut butter M&Ms at the movies).

DP and same. I’m finding I can easily do less than 25g/day and it feels very sustainable to me. Zero sugar is far too much work. For example, the bread and peanut butter I like is about 2g/serving. A flavored seltzer I love is 4g/can. I can stay under 25g eating those things with little effort; I’ve got enough going on in my life that I want as little brain power as possible spent worrying about my diet.

Yesterday I baked for a Super Bowl party we attended and was definitely over 25g. I know it was my choice and it’s worth it to me to sometimes have those homemade baked goods. Thankfully, my kids will make short work of the leftovers.

PP here - thanks! It makes sense and I’ll admit it is a struggle finding bread without added sugar, and snacks are the hardest! I’ve yet to find a granola bar without added sugar.

OP here. Good day. Lots of walking. Added sugar total for the day 6g. I had a bit of sugar in my oatmeal and nothing else for the day. There were temptations but I resisted and didn’t need much will power. Tomorrow is DD birthday. Cake and presents after dinner. I’ll have to run out and get a few gift cards. Chocolate cake with vanilla frosting.

I don’t add sugar and avoid sweets but I feel like everything has sugar even non sweet things. I have milk in my coffee, one slice of cheese and one of bread a day, balsamic vinegar in my in salad and I eat fruit a few times a week. Tonight our recipe includes hoisin sauce which has sugar. Even if I cut out the occasional chocolate I am getting a lot of sugar. Although I should probably count how many grams.

Different PP here and I’m the same. I struggle with what I guess is binge eating and a dessert or candy is really really hard to eat just a little for me, especially in the evening. Slightly sweet things like a yogurt don’t have the same effect. I ate terribly over the weekend and am committing to a really good day of no sweets or chips and lots of fruits and vegetables.

OP checking in. Definitely over with a piece of cake but avoided added sugar completely otherwise. Finishing the day with a cup of unsweetened tea. Feels like a win!

Phew I made it. I nearly had candy cake of cookies (there is way too much of everything in my house!!) but I stayed strong and didn’t. Had a salad with lunch and fruit and tomato with dinner. Pretty good and better than I have done for several days.

Terrific job! I hope a successful day builds into another. Personally, I struggle the most when there is stuff lying around. It kind of helps that DD is gluten free and her cake is dry and crumbly (though tasty) because it’s easier to stop eating it. I did feel a bit deprived without a single piece of candy for Valentines Day but it’s ok. I can have candy today if I really want it.

Thank you! PP you responded to back here and I ate one piece of Valentine’s Day candy thoughtfully with my kids. I enjoyed it way more than the Girl Scout cookies so I should remember that. Over all I did well although I am sure I was over 25g with the candy and my emergency snack when I couldn’t get lunch until later than I wanted it. Am still adjusting to being back in the office sometimes with very limited options- had left my healthy snack at home on the counter…

Good for you! Good can be such a pain.

OP check in. Rough day. I had to go to the office, didn’t have time to pack food. Super busy all morning. Got starving. Ate a gross salad at lunch. Totally unsatisfying. Still starving. Came home around 2 PM. Had apple with PB and a glass of milk. Still starving. Husband brought toast with homemade soup but soup was over salted and inedible. Still starving. Ate some nuts and dried fruit. Hungry. Made hot chocolate and had piece of leftover cake. Finally not starving. Went to my side hustle tutoring job. Came home. Had strawberries and a bowl of corn Chex. Then spoon of PB with a couple chocolate chips. Definitely over for the day. All started by not prioritizing good food. Ugh. I feel yucky and disappointed. Maybe 50g today?

Tomorrow I’m home so should be ok.
