Just today someone in my neighborhood is trying to unload a pit mix that is aggressive towards their new baby. It’s so irresponsible to get a bunch of backyard bred pit mix puppies from the South and put them in suburbia as if being “rescues” makes them suitable family pets. It’s the same thing as getting a border collie and then wondering why it’s not happy sitting home alone all day and instead shreds your drywall.
Blah blah blah my pit mix from the South loves babies, blah blah blah. I’m sure a lot of them are great. |
They also have a very high prey drive. I think the idea of being "breed agnostic" is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I encountered a loose pit mix on the street recently while walking my dog and honestly it felt scary in a way that I haven't experienced. That dog was super interested in us in an aggressive way. I yelled for him to get away several times and he'd back off for a few seconds and then start to approach again. Fortunately (for us) he saw another dog walker and ran in their direction. I heard later that he attacked that person's dog after the person brought him home. |
I googled and found the website below, but is there another organization you recommend to which we can donate? www.nationalpitbullvictimawareness.org |
The prey drive and gameness is a feature, not a bug. I will never understand how people don't get this. It's genetics! A pit attacking and killing small children is literally fulfilling its genetic destiny. Retrievers. So they retriever, right? Correct. Herders. They herd? Yes. Pitbulls? Oh, they're just a blank slate, it's all in how you raise them. Get out of town with that BS. |

+1 million We need to keep spreading the word about these dogs. A lot of people don't really know much, and are appropriately horrified when they found out some of this information about pitbulls. So the more people that get on the side of banning them, eradicating the bloodlines, the better. |
? Why would anyone be “triggered” (do you know what that word means?) by a picture of a family? Unless it was pictures of the pit bull mauled child. I would find that a really shocking and sad image to see, but maybe you sought that out for some reason? |
+1 According to pit bull owners these are magic dogs. They’ve always abused except all pit bull owners are magnificent, responsible pet owners but if a pit bull mauls a cat or a dog or a horse or a child it’s the owners fault unless the cat or the dog or the horse or the child existed in which case the pit bull was simply reacting normally to a living thing sneezing but also pit bulls don’t exist because that’s not a breed except it is because you’re a dog classist or dog racist but no owner should ever have to be charged for essentially having a deadly weapon except it’s not the breed it’s the owner but this one was a bait dog and that’s why I’m taking this fearful, neurotic abused dog to a school as an emotional support dog… It’s a never ending stream of nonsense. OP. |
And they were the original breeders. |
There is something to this. |
+1 Love this and so true |
"8 years without incident", but the children were just 5 months old and 2 years old so the prior 6 years "without incident" (that we know of) is not relevant. The pit bulls waited for their opportunity and took it. Both parents are at fault. Hopefully they will wake up and spread the word. |
| And I doubt that there were multiple years without incident. The mother knew. She wanted the dogs out of the house because she feared for the safety of her children. What caused this fear ? |
It is relevant to charging them with a crime. Regardless of any sanctions, these parents have to live with the guilt and the mother has to live with the trauma of watching her children mauled to death. They are also dealing with the grief and loss of both their children suddenly. You can't punish them in any way that would ever compare to how they will feel for the rest of their lives. |
The dogs most likely had resource guarding issues. Until the kids, the parents probably just easily avoided the triggers and also didn't realize how bad it could get if someone got in the middle of the dogs fighting over something. Also, when dogs are not raised with kids from the time they are a puppy, it's hard for them to get acclimated to the unpredictable nature of young children. |
