(Not the 2yo stuff, but like 8-10 range. He remembers it being a pleasurable experience for him, so he assumed it was for the girls in the videos too, until he had children of his own.) But he also has enough empathy and self-control to never act on it -- and the sense not to look at it online for the past 15 years for fear of getting caught. So I would guess in Josh's case it's a combination of being abused himself, hubris, and lack of empathy.

Read the bolded segments of what you just typed. You are saying that he DID look at this filth online and only stopped 15 yeas ago "for fear of getting caught." And he told you he "gets turned on by" this material?

He is sick, and you don't seem to care that he contributed to this kind of abuse in the past....because buying and viewing this content drives the "industry", so to speak, and even 15+ years ago it was standard for people looking for this filth to be required to prove their trustworthiness, often by adding material or trading material they already had.

Years ago, Diane Rhem had a researcher on that said he found that more people have those thoughts, but the ones who act on it have been molested as children AND have something dysfunctional in their pre-frontal cortex such that their brain does not stop them from acting on it. He had an example of someone who was molested as a child and did not act until he had a head injury in a car accident. The amygdala hippocampus is what ties our memories to our emotions and frequently pushes us to react more emotionally and the pre-frontal cortex is supposed to regulate that and stop us from acting out. When the pre-frontal cortex is damaged or not developed enough we see people making stupid choices (see teenagers choices).

I think the way the Duggar were raised prevented some of their children’s pre-frontal cortexes from forming properly and I think Josh may have been molested too. It doesn’t mean that everyone who was molested and does not have a fully functioning pre-frontal cortex would act like Josh- but it does seem like they were rolling the dice. Who knows, maybe Josh was predisposed to have regulation issues, but his rearing certainly exacerbated them.

Some people who have strong substance abuse have to be watched and prevented from accessing drugs to stop them from using. Josh should never be allowed to have computer access alone or be with children alone. Ever. Being in jail will help that.

With the Duggars, my guess is this occurred decades ago, in both of the parent's young adulthood or childhood. The reasons why, what precipitated this change and what was happening to each psychologically is unknown. Though Michelle has blamed birth control on her first miscarriage and this suggests that she may have already been sitting on an enormous amount of shame and guilt. (She also had bulimia which as I write this out actually makes me wonder if she herself had a sexual trauma history).

If either duggar parent had a history of early sexual trauma then that can be repeated in the following generations in a complicated marrix that includes factors which are likely to be both conscious and deeply unconscious . In addition to biological underpinnings that probably are also at play in pedophilia.

Probably a combination of:

Josh being a victim of sexual abuse himself - he started molesting his sisters and the other non-family victim when he was only 12-13. I don’t think you act out sexually at that young age in that way unless you yourself have also been abused.

He never got treatment or counseling when he was a victim of abuse and his abuser probably got off scot-free as well.

His parents failed him big time by not getting him proper treatment when the molestation came out. They could have helped him and got him into some kind of real treatment, counseling, therapy … and they didn’t really. Combined with the fact that whoever likely abused him also got away with it, he didn’t think there were any consequences for this kind of thing.

As an adult, without any treatment for what happened to him in the past as a teen/tween, he got into a full-blown sex addiction (leading to him cheating on his wife on Ashley Madison) and porn addiction. He was driven to look up worse and worse stuff to get the “high,” just like any other addiction. He got interested in illegal CSAM. And since he and others around him literally never faced any consequences ever - he just didn’t think he could be caught and face real legal consequences. People who were close to the Duggars when the kids were growing up said that Josh was the favorite, treated very well by his parents, and could interact with and talk to his parents and other adults much more freely than other kids in the IBLP/fundamentalist baptist community.

He was a spoiled kid who never saw any consequences until it blew up in his face as an adult.
