In his specific case, I strongly suspect his own abuse, coupled with being raised in an abusive cult and his parents' failure to get him legitimate help, when he was (possibly) abused himself and/or when he abused his sisters, instead issues were swept under the rug.

My other theory is that he's shown sociopathic and abusive behavior for years long before abusing his sisters even, perhaps being mean to animals, or just destroying property etc, but instead of being dealt with he was treated like a little crown prince never facing any consequence his devious behavior only grew, and he thought he could get away with more and more.

I don't subscribe to it was because of the purity/virginity culture he was raised in plenty of people raise in that who aren't pedophiles, and plenty who are not raised in that environment who are.[/quote]

Years ago, Diane Rhem had a researcher on that said he found that more people have those thoughts, but the ones who act on it have been molested as children AND have something dysfunctional in their pre-frontal cortex such that their brain does not stop them from acting on it.  He had an example of someone who was molested as a child and did not act until he had a head injury in a car accident.  The amygdala hippocampus is what ties our memories to our emotions and frequently pushes us to react more emotionally and the pre-frontal cortex is supposed to regulate that and stop us from acting out.  When the pre-frontal cortex is damaged or not developed enough we see people making stupid choices (see teenagers choices).

I think the way the Duggar were raised prevented some of their children’s pre-frontal cortexes from forming properly and I think Josh may have been molested too.  It doesn’t mean that everyone who was molested and does not have a fully functioning pre-frontal cortex would act like Josh- but it does seem like they were rolling the dice.  Who knows, maybe Josh was predisposed to have regulation issues, but his rearing certainly exacerbated them.

Some people who have strong substance abuse have to be watched and prevented from accessing drugs to stop them from using. Josh should never be allowed to have computer access alone or be with children alone. Ever.  Being in jail will help that.
