The information in the link above is so upsetting. What happened to josh Duggar to make him like this??
In his specific case, I strongly suspect his own abuse, coupled with being raised in an abusive cult and his parents' failure to get him legitimate help, when he was (possibly) abused himself and/or when he abused his sisters, instead issues were swept under the rug. My other theory is that he's shown sociopathic and abusive behavior for years long before abusing his sisters even, perhaps being mean to animals, or just destroying property etc, but instead of being dealt with he was treated like a little crown prince never facing any consequence his devious behavior only grew, and he thought he could get away with more and more. I don't subscribe to it was because of the purity/virginity culture he was raised in plenty of people raise in that who aren't pedophiles, and plenty who are not raised in that environment who are.
Interesting theory and I think you might be on to something since they didn’t adopt the uber religious lifestyle until he was a couple years old. Maybe they were scared and thought if they just became super religious that he would have turn out ok.
it is a pretty well known truism that extreme religiosity and faith can easily be used defensively as a way to cope with a whole bunch of inner experiences, feelings, fears and pathologies. It's common...Young adults enter convents and seminaries running from a hoard of possible issues for example (including being gay or having sexual feelings for chikdren). Sometimes the religiosity is a part of a psychotic process, like the mother in the movie "Carrie."Remember the scene in the movie "The Omen" where they find the priest's room completely covered in crosses and the photographer says, "yea he was trying to keep something out". With the Duggars, my guess is this occurred decades ago, in both of the parent's young adulthood or childhood. The reasons why, what precipitated this change and what was happening to each psychologically is unknown. Though Michelle has blamed birth control on her first miscarriage and this suggests that she may have already been sitting on an enormous amount of shame and guilt. (She also had bulimia which as I write this out actually makes me wonder if she herself had a sexual trauma history).
