He blindsided his teams. I don't think he was fired but I think he was told he wouldn't be brought back as I know coaches are already getting new contracts/offers from the new ED and likely GD was told his BS wouldn't be tolerated. I have heard NM wanted to get rid of him and RS was the one who wouldn't pull the trigger so it seems likely PA finally made the right call. |

Post from VRSC thread. Any reactions?
Summary of GD based on PPs (here and GFR thread): Pros: 1. Tries to play possession / tiki-taka based game and to avoid kick and run. 2. Holds players accountable with immediate in-game feedback. 3. Encourages players to do extra training, is willing to spend extra time with interested players, and rewards players who show that commitment with more playing time. Cons: 1. Feedback can be harsh, particularly for sensitive players (and parents). 2. Charges for extra sessions (as does every coach in the DMV), which creates at least an appearance of a conflict of interest for playing time decisions. 3. Doesn’t like women (not clear if this applies to moms, players, or both). |
I agree with all of this except #2 is inaccurate. Unless you count insults feedback. |
| So he encourages players to PAY him for extra training and then rewards those players with more play time? And thats listed as a pro? LOL. |
And the extra training is just an extension of his practices, honestly. It's called "small group" training but it can be 10+ kids in a session and he charges different amounts to different kids lol. It's honestly insane. |
Ever think he was trying to improve the team without the distraction of players who weren’t as capable or serious? Charging for the sessions is necessary otherwise he’d have to include everyone, defeating the purpose, and charging different amounts makes it possible for less affluent kids to join. No one is doing it for free, as we all need to make a living. It’s easy to throw stones based on the $, but I bet what really makes parents upset is that their kid wasn’t invited. |
and you think that helps improve a team to alienate kids who aren't as capable or serious? seems like they're the one's who need the most work. and offering training to some of your team and not others while telling kids who get training from anyone BUT him that that coach SUCKS is a major conflict of interest and not helpful to anyone. |
| I'm honestly shocked the club allows that! Wow. And the parents tolerate it? Wow. That's nuts. |
It's a team sport. They are all on the same team. A reputable coach wants to improve all the players on his team.
I can't believe anyone would hire this guy. Who is taking over his team that he is bailing on to switch to VRSC mid year? |
The players and parents need to want to improve and they need to be willing to do the things that will lead to improvement. Not at all surprising if players and/or parents of the bottom third of a RL team (especially in an area with as many ECNL and GA options as the DMV) don’t have that commitment (even if they think they do). As PP said, seems like this coach was a bad fit for a team at that level. Not sure VRSC will be any different though. |
This sounds so strange to me. Say there are 18 girls on his team. All of the girls and their families are paying lots of money for them to be on that team. Now you are saying if they aren't willing to pay him MORE privately, OR he doesn't want to coach them more, then they "don't have that commitment"? That's completely insane. I would be livid if my ds's coach picked half the players to pay him for extra practices. That simply should not be allowed by the clubs. |
\ He's being paid what? 15,000 or so from GFR to coach each team? He's not working for free. Pay to play private lessons on the side are not allowed by most clubs for a reason. Its hugely divisive. |
RS allowed it. PA apparently does not, hence his departure less than a month after he started. |
He's being paid more than that per team. His salary is public and it was over $100k last year, making more than the TD and almost as much as the ED! Yes, it's hugely divisive - ask anyone who has played for him for more than a season. The last thing girls that age need is more divisiveness..... |
Which one? He has 4 teams at GFR! |
