F them. The audacity of Bibi to show up here and insult Obama. We've given them hundreds of billions of dollars and have put up with their tyranny and unjust treatment of people. Let them do it on their own dime. Not 1 more cent of our tax dollars. |
Thought that time was a long time ago. Doesn't our support jeopardize American safety around the world? |
How do we benefit anyway, by supporting israel? |
Having lived in different parts of the world before coming here, I still do not completely understand why the USA supports Israel so much.
Of course the Palestinian "leadership" is deeply conflicted and violent Hamas ridiculously does not even recognize Israel's right to exist. Sadly that's what you get when you deprive an entire people from the means of subsistence and drive them into the arms of terrorists. As long as Palestine is not allowed to be economically viable, there won't be any peace. |
I have been pretty critical of Israel on here, and do not think we should blindly support them in building settlements and killing Palestinian civilians, but I rear that cutting off aid would shift the balance too far, and lead to the destruction of Israel. |
That's "fear" of course. |
And why is that our problem? Let them worry about their own survival. |
The topic of whether Israel is a net liability to the United States came up a few years ago in the Israeli press. They are somewhat concerned that the relationship may reach a tipping point. But it is very unlikely that the U.S. will ever cut off aid entirely. |
So what is the worry. Maybe we could just distance ourselves. Netanyahu does think of Obama as a personal servant. Amarica is not the only one they can come to. There is Nato and the UN |
We can cut off Israel based on the rightness or wrongness of that act. However, if anyone actually thinks Islamic radicals will just go, 'Sorry about those two decades of jihad. It's all square now, chaps,' is just kidding themselves. Their anger is paramount, a different excuse will be found. |
Great. We can then redirect the hundred of billions of dollars a year we spend on Israel on fighting them. |
It is not clear that our $3 billion a year is needed for their defense. They are a pretty decent economy, with a GDP of over $200 billion. That said, cutting them off is not really the biggest stick we have. |
Not to deny that the amount of aid to Israel is significant, you appear to be off by a large factor. According to Congress Watch (http://www.wrmea.com/component/content/article/245-2008-november/3845-congress-watch-a-conservative-estimate-of-total-direct-us-aid-to-israel-almost-114-billion.html), it's in the range of 2 to 4 billion a year, with the total since Israel was founded in the range of 100 billion plus. But rather than spending the money fighting jihadists, perhaps it would be more effective to extend the Pakistan - Saudi approach and buy them off. |
They really could do "it" on their own, I think it would cost about $1700 per Israeli citizen. That would be about $6 K per household. That is affordable if they really believe in their dream. |
It isn't about the money. It is about the implicit security guarantee, and about our representation on the international stage, including what we do as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. |
