RE: the poster saying "criminals don't follow laws" is a silly argument.
A while back the Washington Post published an analysis of firearm registrations (one example: https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/dc-neighborhoods-packing-heat/story?id=12870238). Turns out that the parts of the city (west of Rock Creek) with the highest number of registered firearms had the lowest levels of crime and the lowest number of shootings. The parts of the city with the lowest number of registered firearms (east of Rock Creek) coincidentally had the highest levels of crime and the highest number of shootings. Take from this what you will, but it sounds to me like people committing these shootings aren't exactly following DC gun laws. And those residents who are law-abiding gun owners aren't the ones committing crimes. So would more laws help? Tougher sentences? Tighter regulations? Remember, DC already has some of the most restrictive firearm laws in the country. There's not much more you can do here. I agree that gun violence is a problem, but the concept of banning guns is a non-starter for so many reasons, aside from the fact it's a constitutionally guaranteed right. The most important one is that there are hundreds of millions of guns in America. Do you honestly think you can confiscate them all? That battle has already been lost. It's time to stop focusing on the guns and instead focusing on the people doing bad things with them. Providing better/ more available mental health options is a good place to start. So-called "red flag" laws are another. Let's start focusing on the "why" these crimes are being committed and less on the "how." |
Wait I thought Europe and Asia are utopias without violent people?? Are you saying there are criminals in those countries now? |
Hold up. There are actually people who think Australia is “like a prison?” This is the level pro gun people are operating at, y’all. Australia actually made gun laws in response to mass shootings and no longer has mass shootings. Is that a “prison?” Why, because their children don’t have to do mass shooter drills at school? Because they have better health insurance? Who is living in a prison here? |
|
Eh, Australia was literally founded as a prison. A penal colony to exile the UK’s criminals to. These white criminals soon nearly exterminated the Indigenous People of Australia. So it’s an absurd comparison to compare the US and Australia because the US is much more diverse racially.
Also, the Australian govt is regarded as a Nanny State. Look at the protests going on right now over covid lockdowns. So yeah, I’d call Australia a prison. Gold bars perhaps. But still a prison. |

Another night and another shooting in NW.
Will there be an end? |
Send us the background on the shooter and victim please. Let’s start a catalog and focus on the shooters and not the tool. |
There is no mention of any information you asked. Three were dead and some are in hospital. According to NBC4, a honda car stopped on the road, gunman started shooting to a crowd. That was it. No video, no photo. Targeted? Random? Better stay home after dark in NW. |
Of course not: this is the one topic where those obsessed with identifying and generalizing about "identities" is verboten. |
Sounds like the victim’s families should be able to bring a massive lawsuit against Honda to force them out of business. One of their cars was used in this crime, so they’re clearly responsible. |
Cars= necessary tool for living Guns= only necessary to kill people or animals Why do we have to trudge through these same stupid arguments over and over again. They are so trite and third grade level. |
Cars a necessary tool for living? No, they are not. Plenty live without one. Weapons were created long before the wheel and motorized vehicles and have been helping people to live (hunt) and stay alive (protect self, family, tribe) for thousands of years. Try again third grader. |
Easy--move to areas where guns are illegal/laws make it hard to get them. |
|
If you are anti-gun regulation and cheered the Supreme Court's failure to uphold Roe V. Wade last week, I hope you realize that what goes around, comes around.
|
No. That is not an effective argument for guns. Female genital mutilation also existed before cars. Nor does anyone want to ban hunting rifles. You are not some vigilante protecting your home. Your gun is statistically most likely to kill you or someone you love, not an enemy or intruder. You are not some brave warrior protecting your castle. Please, grow up! |
Can you please explain why gun registration is such a holy grail? Because the research doesn’t support it as either a crime reducer or a crime solver. |
