A child from my daughter's school was murdered on Tuesday. Just sitting in his apartment, playing video games, shot in the head by a random bullet from gunfire outside his apartment.
His mother, mourning her child right now- that could be me. That could be you. We can play pretend, oh I don't live in one of those apartment complexes, that's where all this stuff happens, I live in a "nice" neighborhood, I live on a cul-de-sac, I live in Bethesda, whatever. The median income in Newtown, where Sandy Hook happened: $127,602. Who are we kidding? The HHI y'all love so darn much can't insulate you from this; this can happen anywhere now. I can't wait anymore, it's time. This was more than close enough to home for me. Tell me what to do. I will follow you, I will follow anyone with a plan. I'm not going to debate guns. You can't tell me someone is going to throw a knife into a random child's home and kill them while they eat dinner. Guns are the problem. Enough is enough. https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/child-shot-in-prince-georges-county-police-say/2782491/ |
| OP, I agree. The Moms Demand group is the one getting the most traction, from what I've seen. |
| I give money to the Moms Demand Actio group. What else can we do? |
|
OP, I agree. I thought about this before this horrible tragedy and it just brings it home even more. We had friends who had a stray bullet go through their living room a couple years ago (they moved). Our toddlers room is closest to the street. I don't know. I hate thinking about this stuff.
I have done events with Moms Demand Action and donated money to them. It feels like such an uphill battle though. Sometimes my DH and I talk about moving to another country that doesn't have this weird obsessive relationship with guns. Just the idea of living somewhere that doesn't have near constant gun violence. |
Girl, we are ALL thinking about this, because the situation is out of control. |
You can lobby your local representatives to find your police department more and to institute stop and frisk policies. They were wildly successful at getting a lot of illegal guns off the streets of NYC. |
|
The first step would be to bring back stop and frisk. You’re not really serious about ending gun violence unless you acknowledge that.
Taking away a few rifles from rural hunters may make you feel better, but won’t do anything to stop criminals with guns in metropolitan areas. |
|
You could tax the shit out of guns, I suppose. Make them crazy expensive.
Our problem in DC is guns flowing in from Virginia. Really we just need to repeal the 2nd amendment. |
| This country understands money so that's where I would go. Tax those guns and make them require pricey insurance. Violations would result in confiscation, etc. No one's constitutional bs rights are violated in the process. |
Why isn't VA having the same problem as DC if this is the case? Perhaps it is the PEOPLE getting the guns, and not the guns themselves? Maybe we need to lock up those who actually commit crimes instead of continually letting them out on the streets? Nearly every killer arrested in cases like this have a rap sheet a mile long. But, it's the guns? |

1. Stop and frisk in the post-Floyd era of law (non) enforcement? You’ve gotta be kidding.
2. Focusing on the magic magnet fantasy of banning guns distracts from the reality that there are habitual criminals who cannot live in a civilized society, and who need to be separated until such time, if any, as they can do so. 3. The vast majority of people who live and work in what are thought of as high crime areas are decent people. Unfortunately, albeit understandably, they too often identify with the criminals rather than the victims, and won’t demand or support the changes that need to happen to get the criminals off the streets. 4. Any firearm that crosses a state line into DC does so only after multiple federal and other crimes. Prosecute the people doing that. 5. The Second Amendment isn’t going anywhere. Even if it did, even if the magic magnet picked up every gun in the country, the criminals would have a complete resupply within months. The US has plenty of firearm producing enemies. The people who bring in drugs are expert at handling contraband. |
This is correct. If you move to Switzerland to avoid the gun nuts, you’re in for a rude awakening. They love guns, they just don’t use them to murder. And the fact of the matter is, America has always been a more violent country than Europe. It’s not “gang violence” or any other code word for minorities people want to use. For whatever reason, America has always had a violence problem. |
| Can't we just make murder illegal? |
I live in an area that has had a ton of guns forever and shootings, much less shootings that result in death, are exceedingly rare. |
| Until you can face the actual cause of the problem, you can't fix it. |
