I am OP and the event in question did not happen in an urban area at all. Smart people would see gun violence in the suburbs as a sign that this is not an “urban” problem but no one is going to accuse Americans of being smart. |
Exactly. A 14 year old killed two people last week with a ghost gun in Germantown. What I want to know is what is the gun supply chain. How did that ghost gun get into that 14 year olds hands? I never see this talked about a lot. I hear about gun shows and bulk purchases in Florida that are brought to DC and NY. But who’s bringing them? Who are they giving the guns to when they arrive? How do they get passes through to young kids? That’s what I would like to understand better and I wish it was talked about more so that we can understand the full context of the problem. |
The gun lobby has worked hard to minimize research on guns in America, but we can talk about this stuff. This can be a starting point, for all of us. Anytime there is really ingrained stupidity in America I assume there is money behind that stupidity. The posters trying to derail this thread may be paid. |
It is really hard to legislate gun control because there are too many people with moderate to conservative views who believe that gun rights outweigh gun control issues and they don't want "slippery slope" issues. The above PP has the right idea...a tax. But the way to make it more pervasive is not to tax guns, but to tax ammunition. Put a heavy tax on ammunition, per bullet. If you add a tax of $5 per bullet, this gets closer to the desired effect. You are going to have less impact on low capacity hunting rifles and more of an impact on high capacity cartridges. We've been trying to legislate that higher capacity cartridges or weapons are the problem, but there has even been pushback on those. So tax it. Add $100 to the price of a cartridge of ammunition for a multi-round cartridge and see how willing they are to use those devices. |
Because there’s no way anybody somewhere else would manufacture ammunition and ship it to the taxing jurisdiction? Because nobody would smuggle ammunition precisely the way they smuggle cigarettes between States? Because there would never be any diversion from “legitimate” shipments to other markets, as with pharmaceuticals? Fantasyland. Do you actually think criminals buy ammunition at the local gun store? They don’t. Confiscated guns are routinely found partially loaded, loaded with a mix of mismatched ammunition, loaded with the wrong ammunition, etc. |
. First thing I do if I am a criminal with a gun … rob a Dick’s and steal a bunch of ammo. No taxes there. God you people are dumb. CRIMINALS use guns to rob, to threaten, and to kill others and criminals by definition don’t follow laws. So pass as many laws as you like. It won’t stop gun violence. At all. The only thing that might stop a criminal with a gun is a cop with a gun or a citizen with a gun or another criminal with a gun. But, sure preach about gun control from your safe, lily-white suburban enclave. |
Here is my question: how are American criminals so brilliant? Why don’t criminals in UK, Japan, Germany have so many guns? Why don’t they need vigilante citizens with guns? Who do you think you are, Batman? This may be news to you but Batman hates guns too. We don’t want to live in a bubble, we want a similar quality of life as our peers in other countries. And that includes less gun violence. |
| 3D printing is about to end the gun debate. We're only a couple years from being able to print any gun. |

A tax on guns has worked before

True. But you need to realize these anti gun DC folks don't care about the illegal guns and those behind the triggers. They just want to make it impossible for law abiding citizens to own firearms. |
This might be news to you. Batman is a fictional character.... |
Not likely. And if it did the gun issues would be the same. |
|
I kind of think the U.S. is doomed. The writing is on the wall, we’re a nation in decline. We couldn’t even mobilize after Sandy Hook. The solution is to leave. |
I see you have no real response! Why is America so special, you guys? Why aren't criminals in other countries getting "illegal" guns and shooting up everybody and their mother? |

Why is America so special, you guys? Why aren't criminals in other countries getting "illegal" guns and shooting up everybody and their mother? Because America has the best everything! We even have the best, smartest most industrious criminals. |
