If Americans are intrinsically more violent, perhaps they should not be allowed to have so much access to guns?? |
Fortunately we have this little thing called the constitution standing between us and your proposed police state. |
But but but I wanted to virtue signal GUNS BAD! If I said GANG MEMBERS BAD, people might think I'm racist. |
Hate to burst your bubble, but in the US, rights aren’t something people are “allowed.” They are intrinsic to the human condition and restraints on them come only by the consent of the governed, as enunciated in the Constitution and related foundational documents. |
This. DC had incredibly stringent gun laws throughout the murder heyday of the Marion Barry/Sharon Pratt Kelly years. There is an incredibly informative book written by an LA Times reporter and published in 2015 called "Ghettoside" which examines the extremely high murder rates in low income AA neighborhoods. The thesis of the book is that low income AA communities are simultaneously over-policed while being under-served by the justice system. The book delves into the cultural attitudes and beliefs of the low-income AA residents of South Central LA---who had never had an experience of being well-served by the justice system---either in the deep south from whence they and their forebears had come from---or by the city in which they now lived. The author goes back and examines the attitudes towards black-on-black crime from the end of slavery through the present day, demonstrating that the historically white-dominated criminal justice system---from the police to the prosecutors to the judges---historically did very little to protect black communities, and in addition, the legal system was used for more than 100 years AFTER the end of slavery to disadvantage black communities. When there is no trust in the police to keep you safe as a witness, and when you know that witnesses are targets, then it is rational behavior NOT to cooperate with the official investigators. But that creates a lawless environment of "eye for an eye" Wild West type of justice, where the bullies with the least scruples thrive. Our current council should focus more on bringing actual justice to communities affected by high-crime, instead of giving the wolves continued free passes to terrorize the sheep. |

I really am not sure what can be done about the urban violence problem OP mentions. Maybe stronger penalties on whoever the last person was to legally register a gun if a crime is done with it to make it less likely it gets sold on the black market to the wrong people?
The lower hanging fruit seems to be to start with the type of problem like Sandy Hook, Columbine, Parkland - availability of crazy fast guns with too much ammo that belong on the battlefield not in a home. We should babystep in the right direction over time |
| It’s so terrible. My heart breaks for the family of that boy, and the girl killed the night of the stadium incident. It’s inexcusable. We live in Shaw and will likely move. I like Moms Demand Action. I also like Sandy Hook promise and Giffords, but not currently giving to any of them. Maybe thats what ill do. Give a set amount monthly. We need voting rights for DC too. Support that cause. |
What would actual justice look like, if not perpetuating mass incarceration, long sentences, etc. i dont disagree necessarily, just skeptical that “violence interruptors” and otger prescriptions work at all let alone better than the current system. |
We will get voting rights in DC once the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth comes into being. It has been too long, but statehood is right around the corner! |
Same here. Grew up around guns. Lots of them, and they were unlocked. Difference between us as kids and the kids today: we didn’t use guns on our fellow man. Keep your unconstitutional laws to yourself; my rights are NOT negotiable!! |
Statehood is not coming to DC anytime soon. We can't even run our own DMV here. It is unbelievable. Oh and why are we trying to name our state after someone who is not from here and did not want to be buried here? Never really made sense. I would not like it, but I could see how a retrocession to MD would work. |
[b]“Maybe stronger penalties on whoever the last person was to legally register a gun if a crime is done with it to make it less likely it gets sold on the black market to the wrong people.”[b] You want to punish people who cooperate in firearm registration? Are you delusional? Precisely what is a “crazy fast gun?” Do you have even a semblance of a clue what you’re talking about? |
| Yes, the vast majority of people with HHI will be shielding from gun violence. It’s a fact. |
“HHI” didn’t help you learn how to write coherent sentences, you think it can save you from guns? Most likely not. |
