The Bachelor 2021- Matt James

Both men said they have to be extra careful in what they say and do because they feel pressure to set a good example as a black man. I felt bad for Matt- you can see that he is struggling with the situation but I didn't think he and Rachel would last regardless.

I watched it and thought it was odd he never really had any of those conversations. Maybe it wasn't aired but it didn't seem that he did.

Hillbilly America watches this show so I like how they discussed everything without making it 'threatening for the racists'... hopefully it does make people think about their upbringing/behaviour... at one point I was just cringing with how Rachel kept insisting she was 'educating herself' without explaining or offering examples... and she was sitting between two black men, yet still so clueless. You can't get blood from a stone. Poor Matt. At one point when Acho was like 'ok you can hug and say goodbye' and Matt could not even move or look at her... and they sat stiffly. Was so cringe. I mean you can be ignorant/unaware or have differences in world view or upbringing... but when you can't even come to terms to talk/learn from each other.... damn. I think that is her youth perhaps- totally lacking in depth... but also perhaps he was too inarticulate with her to get her to understand.

Ugh, run far from each other and stay far away.

I know him b/c he dated one of the girls from the HBO show Insecure. I also sometimes see him before football games talking on tv at my parents house too lol. I think he's a sportscaster. But he also has this book called uncomfortable conversations with a black man and I think it recently came out. Maybe about a month or two ago.

He's an identity crisis nightmare.

Ding ding ding. She was very remorseful and I don’t believe she’s a racist. I think if was actually into her he would have worked it out, he sucks and that beard is atrocious. He was never marrying any of them.

It’s annoying but I feel like this is the producer’s fault. They obviously went hard on the drama. Introducing new girls as a surprise, come on. And obviously everyone was drunk and up until 3 AM doing those interviews. The whole thing felt really fake and tired. I wondered if there just wasn’t anything good happening on the dates because Matt was obviously putting out a very guarded nice version of himself that also drew inauthenticity from others. Just a weird season.

He clearly has such a negative attachment to his racial identity because of his parents he really can’t be with anyone with even a hint of this in his past. I had a friend in high school who was biracial and her mom was white and her dad was a real jerk, deadbeat. Her mom told me to my face that I shouldn’t marry a black man when I got older. (I’m black btw). I can only imagine what kind of messages she was giving her kids. I got a similar vibe from Matt’s mom. They honestly all need lots of therapy.

*her past.

My point is Rachel seems like a dummy to me and not a terrible person but Matt really needs to be with someone who can 100% affirm his racial identity.

Ahh, thanks for adding/explaining that. Will check that out.

It was pretty obvious by mid season that he didn't want to get married, maybe ever. But he isn't ready to actually admit that to himself it seems.

no shade, but not sure Matt can affirm his racial identity. i don't know his mom but she maybe didn't affirm it and his friend group is comprised mainly of white folks. it seems like something he just kinda ignores and doesn't think about.

I don't know about "ever" but he most certainly was not ready to get married. He needs another decade or so of maturing.

The producers are supposed to pivk a lead WHO WANTS TO GET MARRIED. Huge fail on their part...they put Matt out therr as a marriage- minded guy and he wasn't. I wish Acho would have asked SOME questions about Matt not being ready to get engaged and the demons holding him back. That's what we saw on the show...Matt didn't want to get engaged when he knew nothing of Rachel's mistakes.

I think the Bach franchise wanted to breeze right past their failure to pick a suitable lead.

Yeah. I mean of course the show is stupid as it is but it becomes even more pointless if it’s just a guy spending weeks picking which girl he would most like to date.

I agree with this100%. His reaction was way too extreme if he really was into her. It was so obvious that he wasn’t into any of those girls. That’s one of the reasons this season was so boring. No chemistry.

That’s why Acho was not an appropriate pick for the show.
