I wish Acho would have asked SOME questions about Matt not being ready to get engaged and the demons holding him back. That's what we saw on the show...Matt didn't want to get engaged when he knew nothing of Rachel's mistakes.

I think the Bach franchise wanted to breeze right past their failure to pick a suitable lead.

That’s why Acho was not an appropriate pick for the show.

No! Acho was a great host. Matt James was a bad choice for lead--they had several options for a POC lead from past seasons--men who actually want to get married.

Ivan, the aerospace engineer from TX would have been a good choice, plus he's both black and Asian.

Yes! He's awesome. He may have been too much of a nice guy though for the show.

Hillbilly America watches this show so I like how they discussed everything without making it 'threatening for the racists'... hopefully it does make people think about their upbringing/behaviour... at one point I was just cringing with how Rachel kept insisting she was 'educating herself' without explaining or offering examples... and she was sitting between two black men, yet still so clueless. You can't get blood from a stone. Poor Matt. At one point when Acho was like 'ok you can hug and say goodbye' and Matt could not even move or look at her... and they sat stiffly. Was so cringe. I mean you can be ignorant/unaware or have differences in world view or upbringing... but when you can't even come to terms to talk/learn from each other.... damn. I think that is her youth perhaps- totally lacking in depth... but also perhaps he was too inarticulate with her to get her to understand.

Ugh, run far from each other and stay far away.

I've always liked Matt but the fact that he couldn't even look at her or could barely say a word was very disappointing. I find the whole thing over the top. I'm a POC in my 40s and I can think back of a handful of times that my friends (of various backgrounds) have said some racially ignorant things and I've done some things too that would make people cringe these days. In all situations no friendships were ruined and in fact some of these events gave us an opportunity to have meaningful discussions about race and stereotypes and guess what, we learned from each other. Friendships and relationships don't have to end.

Yeah, but I wouldn't want to marry that person!

DP. Similarly, I wouldn’t want to marry a man who hangs out with men who jokingly insult women’s bodies and joins in the laughter. Which is what Matt did in that clip with his buddies on the golf course.

I completely agree! That was absolutely disgusting and disrespectful!

Matt is immature and not ready for marriage but what the show did to him was also disgusting. Between trapping his dad for an extremely uncomfortable gotcha talk plus setting him up with an outright racist...they monopolized on his trauma.

I think we was too normal, he wouldn't have kept any of the drama llamas around. IRL that's a good thing, on this show, not so much

My point is Rachel seems like a dummy to me and not a terrible person but Matt really needs to be with someone who can 100% affirm his racial identity.

Then why didn't he pick Michelle? They both have white mothers and black fathers.

I just finished watching ATFR. That was the most depressing ATFR ever. I don't know if how Matt was acting was all because of the pictures. He already was having doubts before the pictures surfaced. What his mother said about love not being the be all end all seemed to get to him. And then him not hugging her at the end was kind of harsh.

I'm ready for the next season. Why are there 2 bachelorettes?

Did anyone notice how Matt had his hands on his mum's legs/knees when they were talking? Like a cross between a boyfriend and a little kid? I'm all for human touch and close families but it was a little huh? yuck! and yeesh... at the same time... He did seem to be rattled by what she said. I think she is a level-5 kook though and she has the crazy eyes so I think he needs to get his scrotum out of her purse and grow up.

-irrelevant note- I can't believe his brother had fronts! Ivan and Matt both have that 'sketch' brother- take that, white america- black people: they are just like you!

I did notice his hand on his mom's knee. It's good he loves his mother, but I think he and that other girl he liked who was Canadian, both their mothers injected them with self doubt.
