Most MSI games are played at fields that have no access to bathrooms. Schools are generally closed during games, and some are played at local parks with no bathroom facilities.

It's still illegal. MSI is a business with employees who work these games. Employees are entitled to bathroom facilities.

MSI is nuts! You know they don't even pay the coaches for Rec. One year, we had a fantastic coach because we didn't have a parent, and come to find out, he wasn't even getting paid! Parents chipped in and were very generous.

But, it's not like MSI is a charity. People are making money off these volunteer coaches. WTF?

"MSI is a non-profit youth soccer organization that promotes youth soccer in Montgomery County. MSI emphasizes each child's enjoyment, personal growth, skill development and team experience through excellent leadership, fair play and good sportsmanship." https://www.msisoccer.org/Default.aspx? tabid=387734

That in fact did profit in the millions and hid the money to pay for artificial turf.

But that "profit" is being used for the benefit of the players by way of investment in playing fields. It is not going to employees as bonuses or being invested in new office furniture.

agree. I am a little shocked they use the school facilities, but can't use the bathroom. WTH?

The school buildings are general locked at the times MSI uses the fields for games. The games are 1 hour long. I have had issues with toddler siblings needing a bathroom, but never with the actual players (or adults for that matter). Practices are often at school buildings after school, at which times the school buildings are often open with people going in and out and kids can use the bathroom and water fountain if needed (and in my experience frequently do). If the games/practices are in parks without bathrooms, well, those are parks that were built without bathrooms. Some do have porta pottys, but my kids are the kind that as soon as they see the porta potty, they suddenly don't have to go anymore No one wants to use porta pottys.

But if a school say JW has games all day long and employees like refs and field managers there, shouldn't they have open bathrooms? They can spend millions in fields, but not have bathroom access?

I believe refs generally only do 2 games back to back, so that is two hours. There are no other MSI "employees" at the fields for any length of time. For tournaments, games are at facilities with restrooms.

No, "for profit" and "non-profit" are terms with specific definitions. MSI does not enrich its owners by distributing profits to them or dividends to shareholders or anything like that. Non-profit organizations can and do raise and maintain funds to reinvest in the mission of the non-profit. Investing in fields and playing space that their teams will use for practices and games is well within the scope of MSI's mission. (Based on their website. I have not seen their founding documents, but I guarantee there are Articles of Incorporation or some such document that lays out the permissible activities of the organization.) If the organization uses funds raised or earned to invest or reinvest in the mission of the non-profit, that does not mean that it is a money-making business that benefits its private owners who receive "profits."

Who says? No one knew they were stockpiling millions to pay for artificial turf. Who knows what they do with their money. There is no audit or public accountability.

Using their millions to buy fields for public schools is clearly not their mission. Yet, that is what they just did. What else is off in their spending?

I agree they should have bathrooms, but they don’t at the other schools either. Kids and adults hold it.

Adults hold it. Kids do not.

One game we were at (at a different MS), one girl even went into the woods to do a #2. Now, THAT would be gross on turf.

Uh, OK. I never saw that at any MSI games I attended but sure. We all held it or drove to an actual bathroom.

Plus I love how you think a kid is pooping in the middle of the soccer field. Right

Children and adults go behind a tree. They do it all the time. Maybe your kid goes in the middle of the field, but others go off to a tree.

This is disgusting. Who pays fees to a company to play and they don't even have bathrooms for practices or games. Do you know how little it would cost MSI to get at least a porta john. We play softball/baseball thru RBBA and they supply porta johns for fields that do not have bathrooms or local businesses in walking distance.

Do you realize that the $2.4M that MSI paid MCPS for the turf field construction is basically an exclusive right to use the turf field for 10 years? This is basically a 10 year pre-paid lease to use the field. The bathroom facility is the responsibility of MCPS to provide.

Holy smokes! There are some outrageous lies and misinformation in this thread.

JW has the same turf field that is used at Germantown Soccerplex. It it safe.

Annual Maintenance of grass field costs approximately $60K while annual maintenance for turf field is about $20K.

NO. No teacher salary is being cut to pay for turf management/maintenance.

MCPS can charge a lot more for turf field rentals compared to grass fields.

Please stop with the lies. I have a DC that will be attending JW next year and I’m excited that they will have better field to play on than the crappy grass field that was previously there.

+1000. And JW still has priority use over MSI. This is great for Rockvilke and MCPS!

Do you realize that the overall design, planning, and construction management is done by MCPS? MCPS was also the one that selected the construction company. MSI was only responsible to write the $2.4M check to MCPS. Hence, MCPS has total control of how the money would be spent including the need for a bathroom facility. MSI has no say. Not too hard to understand, people!

Thank you! Lots of angst on here.

FWIW, one DC is there at JW now, and the other plays for MSI (and used to be at JW).

And posters are right, the fields that MSI play on don't always have bathrooms. Some of the parks do, but some don't. And when my DC played MSA softball at Bells Mill ES, the staff at the school wouldn't let the girls (6 yr olds) into the school to use the bathroom. So they went in the bushes.

Can't realize what isn't true. MSI does not have an exclusive right to the fields. Read the contract.

Bathrooms are the responsibility of MSI. Again, read the contract. You might learn something.

Well you added more misinformation.

The SoccerPlex is not the same as JWMS. Totally different company, product and materials.

YES, teachers salaries are cut to pay for this. MCPS takes money from the Operating Budget to pay for MSI Soccer fields. That means less money to pay teachers.

MCPS has not been able to charge anything for field rentals. They don't rent the fields and the imagine rental fees never came in to the County. MCPS has been using Operating Budget funds to install and replace these fields.

No they don't MSI is already scheduling games on their times without clearing it with MCPS or the City.

They do have an exclusive right to use the field in terms of first choice before any other outside entity. Let's not mince words here people.

Bathrooms responsibility of MSI? Where is that in the contract. Please post a link or screenshot for us, because otherwise your statement is a fairy tale.
