Is there or isn’t there a crisis on the border?

And, is ANY admin going to try and work with Congress to address the influx of a large number of people who will be a burden on the social safety network in the US, be it curtailing the influx or strengthening the system to try and accommodate them?

There are lots of things that could be done. We don't have a shortage of jobs, unemployment is at a low, we hire them anyhow, that's who's picking your vegetables, who's working the grill at your favorite diner, who cleans your office, who's building the office building a block over. So how about reforming the worker visa process for starters? And thereby get them legally paying more into taxes et cetera? Let more workers come legally, shutting down a lot of the human smuggling and other activity? Less people asking for asylum? And how about legalizing marijuana, shutting down a lot of the drug smuggling? And how about actually addressing the opioid problem to reduce some of the other illegal drug smuggling? And how about so many other things that would reduce the need for illegal crossings? And how about we start working more effectively with El Salvador and Honduras to stabilize those countries so that less people are trying to flee them?

But no, let's ignore those and a thousand other possible things that could be done and just focus solely on building a wall.

Good luck with your laundry list. It worked oh so well for your last President, didn’t it? Shut Down the Border - illegal invasion stopped pronto. What’s not to like? Or are you really for Hillary’s “open border” policy?

What's not to like is that it will hurt a lot of legitimate business, it will hurt trade, you can expect much of your produce to vanish from your grocery store, et cetera.
That's the problem with conservatives, they constantly come up with knee-jerk simplistic answers to complicated issues and never think of the consequences.

Speak for yourself, my friend. The invasion must S-T-O-P.
DO whatever it takes. Stop making excuses.

OMGERD!!! INVASION!!!! PANIC!!!!

Even Obama’s folks are saying 12,000 in custody is a crisis. Don’t be such a moron.

How are they a burden on the social safety net when they are ineligible to receive federal social safety net funds?

I can't believe this is even a question. Schools are overcrowded with illegal immigrants. Hospitals/ERs are delivering medical care (for free) to illegal immigrants. Are you really this dense??

Also There is a “wait in Mexico” program, but is it only at the California checkpoints? I have read that the border agents and facilities are so overwhelmed that large numbers of “asylum seekers” are being released into the us without even having been processed, which supposedly means it’s like an officially blessed illegal entry?

Yes, this is absolutely correct. And now that word has gotten out, expect even more "asylum seekers" to arrive, knowing they'll be released within a few days, free to go on their way within the U.S.

EL PASO — The nation’s top border official warned that the U.S. immigration enforcement system along the nation’s southern boundary is at “the breaking point” and said Wednesday that authorities are having to release migrants into the country after cursory background checks because of a crush of asylum-seeking families with children.
Kevin McAleenan, the commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said that for the first time in more than a decade, his agency is “reluctantly” performing direct releases of migrants, meaning they are not turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, they are not detained, they are not given ankle bracelets to track their movements and they are allowed to leave with just a notice to appear in court at a later date.
He said that this is a “negative outcome” but that it is “the only current option we have” because of overcrowding at detention facilities as Central Americans stream to the border knowing they will be able to gain entry with asylum claims.

I think the wall needs to be built on the southern border of Mexico, not the US. And Mexico can be paid to make sure “asylum seekers” are not reaching its northern border. Now Mexico achieves this should be at mexico’s full discretion.

Is there any reason why asylum prescreenings cannot be conducted in Mexico by US immigration officers? This will allow the genuine cases to come to the US and not be swept up with all others.

There might be some law or regulation about it. Besides, Mexico will not be happy. But, I believe EU eventually reached an agreement with Turkey to set up processing centers for Syrian refugees. I think it can be done with Mexico.

We have zero obligation to these people. We need a wall, strict asylum criteria, and a zero tolerance deportation enforcement. All borders should be open only for certain goods, not people. You won’t die without cheap fruit or cheap drink-a-thons in Cabo.

Just curious DP - How did your parents and/or grandparents immigrate to the US?

Healthcare for one, genius

ERs can't say no to helping people. Many illegal immigrants use the hospital ERs when they're sick. And if they can't pay, guess what? The ER won't say no again if another emergency arises and they are in collections.

babies? My niece works in the OB ward of a major hospital. Who's paying for the delivery and after care?

schools? Again - schools don't turn down children who have entered the country illegally. They will receive free breakfast and lunch and ESOL services until 21, if necessary. Translation services are used during meetings. Sometimes there's a certified ESOL counselor who's hired, too. School allocations come in one pot and monies are distributed based on need. So English classroom sizes increase, for example, in order to create more ESOL classes. Your average, hard-working child will be in classes of 30+, with kids of mixed abilities. These are PUBLICLY funded measures WE pay for. It doesn't come out of any president's a**.

It sounds harsh, but it's the truth.

Furthermore, for the person using all caps regarding the "crisis," it is a crisis. I have a friend in immigration who's been sent all over the place to assist in processing newcomers. I believe they requested to hire more immigration judges b/c the few they had weren't enough to process people through quickly enough. This led to other issues - newcomers who didn't receive legal support in a timely fashion, for example.

So it's easy to call everyone a racist when you're sitting behind your television sipping your wine. Try being in the courts when you see lines of people waiting for their time - and some in cuffs b/c they're criminals and rapists and child molesters.

And you should turn to C-Span to see the actual questioning of those directly involved in this mess.

So someone has to find an answer. If this is the land of immigrants, then we need to figure out how to balance THEIR needs with the needs of our citizens (native born and naturalized).

Do you just let any door-to-door salesperson into your house? Do you entertain all telemarketers? I think not. I'm guessing you're choosy about whom you allow into your life. So what you practice at home as a private citizen should guide your beliefs in immigration. Not every person can enter our land. Look at Europe - Italy especially - and learn from them.

If this is an international crisis, then these leaders better figure out steps to take - cuz it ain't workin'!

To be honest, they didn’t. I’m registered Baxoje, grew up on reservation land in Kansas and thanks to immigration to our country, there’s hardly any of us left.
