Secret report shows ‘special’ treatment for public officials in D.C. school lottery

If we didn't have so much corruption, we'd have more money for our schools. It's all connected.

We are capable of focusing on multiple issues. I've worked through other avenues to fight for more funding.

Why don't you start another thread if you are concerned about funding?

Why do Courtney Snowden, Roberto Rodriguez, the city administrator, etc. think they can game the system at the expense of disabled children and the working class?

I'm sorry, if you make over $200K or work for a President, you are doing okay. You don't need a special connection. Let's focus on those that truly need support in this world.

I agree, PP. It's probably just the two of us, but at least you're not alone.

This whole thing is disgusting. Courtney Snowden should be terminated from her Deputy Mayor position. I do not feel sorry for someone who is making close to 200K - compliments of my hard-earned tax dollars. She had her kids in private school because she could afford to pay for it - those mere mortals in DC who make far less than her do not even have that option. A public servant should not be allowed to further enrich her own family by skirting the system that the rest of us are bound by. Bowser needs to clean ojt her corrupt staff if she wants to gain the trust of any parents in DC. And, I am already pissed at the Mayor for all the advocacy that had to happen because she put together a budget that screwed the schools.

Government officials treating schools like their own little fiefdoms and rewarding friends with favors is how you end up with budget cuts. They only care about themselves

Looks like Kaya is feeling better about this

Its all immaterial to her. She got hers.

Kay clearly abused her power and she's no longer in her position. Can she still be named in a lawsuit if a group of parents wishes to sue? I would love for her to be personally liable for making personal decisions that favored her friends to the detriment of the rest kid is.

You'd be suing the City for the actions she took on its behalf. She would be named as an official, but any damages would not come from her personally.

True, but I can believe that Brent, given its proximity to Gaulludet, might have a bigger or better organized proportion of kids fluent in ASL with deaf parents.

I hate to detract from the main point of this thread which is to skewer DC officials for their blatant corruption BUT ...

Brent is nowhere near Gallaudet. There are like 5 other elementary schools that are closer.

You beat me to it! Welcome to DCUM, where knowing anything isn't a prerequisite to stating an opinion.

it's in the general proximity, and I can certainly see that given how schools and neighborhoods developed, a cohort of Gaullaudet-affiliated parents would have enrolled their kids in Brent starting several years ago OOB, or moved in-bounds on the Hill. In fact there's an entire group called Capitol hill Children of Deaf Parents. But yeah, welcome to DCUM where everyone believes that they are THEEE expert.

No, it isn't. Maps and distances aren't debatable just because you know how make an eyeroll emoji.

do you have evidence that there is no community of children with deaf parents at Brent?

What's next? Asking if she has proof that there are no unicorns and fairies? If you know that exists at Brent, then please just state it rather than asking someone to prove a negative.

I can't believe people are giving the citizen requesters grief. They had the right to ask as discretion was a valid option. The denials reflect lack of political connection in geting the request approved. All of the requests granted were connected and all of the denials were not.

I don't really care if the request is reasonable or not, but I do resent the political calculations between Henderson and Beers about whether or not to grant.

Of course they deserve grief. They were in positions of power and put Henderson in a position where she could pull strings for them or have to suffer under them. (Rodriguez more reflects Henderson granting a favor in order to help her career, but the district officials are absolutely in the wrong for their cronyism.)

Yeah, plus that wasn't the issue, was it? No one is saying there is or isn't a community of deaf parents. What I took issue with was the inane and uninformed observation that Brent is in close proximity to Gallaudet. It isn't. It isn't even in the same Ward!

Yeah acting like Adrian Fenty (one of the "citizens") was treated the same way you or I was is completely ludicrous. This was his second special placement in a WOTP school, and he's dating a mega-billionaire!!!! Not to get all ad hominem but honestly you should be embarrassed for making this argument

The poor mother who made the request and already has her plateful dealing with the deaf child was told no. Happy? Now let's focus on the fat bureaucrats who selfishly took advantage

Really???!!! Cause deaf kids are such a burden? I bet you are one of those people who probably give your gay friends permission or absolution, like they need your approval. Ignorant fool.

Well, assuming all of the data and relevant emails will be made available, the next step would be to subpoena Kaya Henderson about what she did. As long as she doesn't lie, she's not going to be in any legal jeopardy. As for her future employment prospects, probably not so great.
