Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| Out of curiosity, what was the OBs stance? |
It was more about how there isn't a solid definition of transgendered kids and how that makes educating kids about the issue before a certain developmental age is confusing for them. I didn't necessarily agree with her but can see that point. Almost everything everyone else said in opposition though was like...so bad. |
Wow, that was typo ridden, what I meant was: It was more about how there isn't a solid definition of what defines a transgendered person and how that makes educating kids about these differences before a certain developmental age is confusing for them. |
And just imagine: if gay people get a toaster oven for every person they convert, trans people must get something even better! What do you think: like a full convection oven, or what? |
| Not long ago a number of gays I know suggested dropping the 'T' in LGBT, as being bad for the brand. |
| How many transgendered students does fcps have? How many teachers or administrators? At some point, isn't this all a colossal waste of time, money, resources for a tiny percentage of transgendered people? |
I know at least two. |
I'd like real statistics. Will fcps write inclusive language to protect nudists? Teachers with full facial tattoos? Skinheads? Not trying to be flippant about this, but think his is a dangerous road to travel and will set precedents for truly odd inclusions. |
This is what ever right wing nut job says about every basic human right granted to a minority. Slippery slope, etc. Enough. There isn't a slippery slope. |
See this is the problem. Aren't we supposed to be mutually respectful? Isn't that what the vote was about? But if someone disagrees on this issue, they are a right wing nut job. What about the rights of the right wing nut job? Oh yeah that's right, they have none. |
The difference is in things that are believed to be innate/immutable vs. choices. The research is increasingly demonstrating that gender identity is and immutable trait, whereas being a nudist, tattoo aficionado or skinhead is a choice. Granted, some would argue that living as the gender you feel you are is a choice, but we've also come to appreciate the deep psychological harm that comes from being forced to live other than as you are. |
I wouldn't have a problem with a teacher who was a nudist, had facial tattoos, or was a skinhead. As long as the were a non-racist skinhead. |
Of course you have rights. Under the policy, you now have the right to be free of discrimination based on your gender identity if you work for FCPS. You just don't appreciate it because you *always* had that right, since your gender identity aligns with your genitals. |
No, I'm not ever going to be respectful of a group of idiots who say things like being trans is a mental illness and that trans people spread HIV rampantly, or that since there are a lot of catholic Hispanics in FCPS, we need to not have any trans people in school, and this is racist against them. This is what was said in citizen testimony. This is what the opposition believes. Nope. |
I didn't hear all the testimony, but I did hear that one. I cringed. He certainly didn't help his side. I was against passage last night. I think they need the policy first. I have no problems with it otherwise. |
