And the fact that you did not find it ignorant and are blatantly progressive proves my point. It's the nastiness in which it was said, and the fact that race had to be brought into the topic. But then Jeff, you are the absolute master at this sort of thing. |
A working knowledge of American history is not necessarily progressive, though I admit conservatives often neglect it. A statement can be both accurate and nasty. That doesn't make it ignorant. |
I'll say this much. My boss graduated from Harvard's PhD program. Considering he has 5 mentors trying to train him to do his job, I am not impressed - especially since I'm the one DOING his job. Thank you, UMCP! twice! and a shout out to Hopkins! |
| The fact remains if you brag about your family being on the Mayflower you are bragging that your family owned slaves and were murderers? Yes, it is nasty and true. |
Only if you can also explain what your 16-year-old daughter meant by this. |
So you would be okay with somebody bragging that hey were related to Hitler? |
I don't get it. One PP said that they could not possibly be low class (unlike all of those other private school arrivistes) because the their ancestors came over on the Mayflower. Another PP then responded that people who came over on the Mayflower started slavery. How is this making everything about race and racial hatred? How is this comparable to Jews hating or not hating all Germans? |
Mayflower ancestors ==/== related to Hitler. The pilgrims and first settlers were often indentured laborers themselves. I learned this in public school, don't they teach this in private schools? |
This probably is not a meaningful difference, from the point of view of the people who were here before the Pilgrims and "first settlers". (But I am not one of them and do not speak for them.) In any case, what amuses me is the idea that one cannot be "low class" (whatever that means) if one's ancestors arrived on the Mayflower. |
| Boy, this thread really went far off the rails! |
Ditto! |
No, the PP said that individual was bragging about starting slavery, that it was the same. |
Which just goes to show how silly some of you are. Mayflower ancestors ==/== bragging about starting slavery. Some of you need a good course in reading comprehension, it doesn't matter if it's in a public or private school. |
The Mayflower PP said, "I secretly think lots of the parents at our private school are first generation social climbers without any real class. My family came over on the Mayflower, so this stuff is irrelevant to me." The next PP said, "This is akin to bragging that your family started slavery in the US." |
| This thread has spun so wildly out of control that we're now parsing posts from 10 pages ago. All of need to get new lives (and this includes me for continuing to read it). |
