Any Jack & Jill members here?

Anonymous
I just moved to Montgomery County, MD a couple of years ago. I work in DC and have not met any mom friends in my area yet. Most people I know do not have kids or live in DC. I and would be interested in joining a local chapter so my kids can have friends in this area but do not know any local chapter members. Everyone I know in Jack and Jill are in the area where I use to live. How can you join if you do not know any of the other members of your local chapter?

Exactly not to mention that the pastor that was killed in the Charleston shooting has a family member in one of the East Coast chapters of Jack & Jill inc.

I'm confused. Have well to do whites run to Tennessee, south GA, Alabama, and the Appalachia to help poor whites many of whom are addicted to heroine?

If Whites are excluded, that's segregation.

I am in both Mocha Moms and Jack and Jill. Whites are NOT excluded. We have white moms in both groups and there are some in executive positions (in J&J). We hang out, travel together and get along. I think that some of the people who are posting about the criteria to get into J&J are not really in it because what they are saying is not accurate. In order to be part of J&J you must be invited and sponsored by an existing member and once you are sponsored, the existing members have to vote you in. With Mocha Moms, it is just an application and a fee of $50.00 (at least for the Silver Spring Chapter). Mocha Moms is VERY down to earth and can be a little granola but they are good friendly people and they hold lots of fun non-pretentious events.

For people who have negative things to say about J&J, the bottom line is everything is not for everybody. Unless or until someone invites you to be a member of J&J, don't worry about it because you really are not in a position to consider whether you would be a part of it or not. That said, the organization offers wonderful opportunities for kids of color who are from upper middle class to wealthy backgrounds. These kids usually live in far flung suburbs and are the only or one of few kids of color in their schools. J&J gives them an opportunity to interact and socialize with kids with similar backgrounds so that they do not feel so isolated and disconnected. Unless you are a parent of a black child in this type of situation, you will not understand. For those who cannot afford to be in J&J, nothing stops them from forming their own groups or organizations or getting some friends together and do some of the same activities on their own.

I’m interested in bringing this thread back to life. Why does it have to be so exclusive?

The reason I ask, is we are upper middle class/borderline wealthy. I have great experience with hosting educational events, fundraisers, etc. I’m very involved at my daughter’s school. I was interested because my daughter is the only black girl in her entire grade. I just wanted to understand why are some chapters so cold. I know not everyone. I just couldn’t comprehend the snub. I have many friends in JJ, but unfortunately they are in another chapter. We seriously even considered moving (extreme and we came to our senses). It just hurts my daughter to not see anyone who looks like her. She has friends, but when she gets around other black kids she lights up!!! It would be great to surround herself with kids with similar backgrounds.

The saddest part is, I got snubbed by someone who was an acquaintance. She knows my work and wouldn’t even send me info about the open events.

I guess In a way I’m a little bitter and my heart hurts for my daughter. When I want something I work hard and I get it, but with this I hit a wall or rather a locked door.

We have church and church. Mocha moms it is.

I don't understand why people do this. I would never put my Black kid in a position to be "the only". It happened to me growing up, and it was very difficult. When we did move, and I was around other black people (and other non-white people) I felt like my world opened up. It was horrible being the only Black girl. I'm so glad it was only for a few years.

Unfortunately—- the “best schools” are in the white neighborhoods. Well based on the biased ranking system. We didn’t know any better. We never imagined it would be this way. We thought with it being northern VA—- there would be more diversity.

In general she is happy here. She has her moments.

Some
Members are cool, but there are some that wish to be white sooooooooo bad. It’s been that was since inception. Some (not all) believe if they can be successful and rub elbows with the elite whites they can escape the systemic racism is poe black folk don’t experience.

But for real why so exclusive? Such a great organization that could benefit many. Why not as long as they can afford it. Honestly, it seems to be rooted in white supremacy (there fear is all of the blacks reaching success so they try to hold us back). The black race is doomed. Nobody wants to help each other. Fearful that there isn’t enough pie to go around for us all.

Waiting on the post that says "white neighborhoods" don't exist. When they quite obviously do.
