I belonged in the 70/80s as a kid. My mom liked it and my dad hated it. Now I have a kid and am on the fence about joining. We live in the "lilly white" suburbs and It would be nice for my boy to meet other black kids but I don't think that DW and I could stand the drama. They should make a new Bravo Network show about Jack & Jill.

This! I have never heard of Jack & Jill (maybe because I am white). I would totally watch. LA Shrinks is not doing it for me.

I would find other way to connect with others that look like me in my community if I lived someplace like say North Arlington or McLean. There are several organizations that you can achieve this through beyond Jack and Jill. I am an AKA and a lawyer so I know many people who belong, however I do not think it is for me. Many I know that belong are from multi-generations of success and higher education and have grandparents who were doctors, lawyers, etc. I am the first generation to make it big and I just don't click with most people of the ilk described in Our Kind of People http://www.amazon.com/Our-Kind-People-Inside-Americas/dp/0060984384

I find Mocha Moms to be more down to earth

J&J was founded by Blacks that wanted to be exclusionary and were themselves excluded from DAR and the such.

Hey 15:29 - you bio sounds like me (AKA, lawyer, first in family to college) but I have never joined mocha moms because I thought it was only for sahms. Do only certain chapters include working moms? I have been thinking about Jack and Jill, but like you, am not sure if I would fit in.

Which mocha moms group are you a part of? I live in NOVA and have been contemplating reaching out to a chapter. Thanks!

Only if your child is Black/biracial. And even then, you probably won't be welcome.

+1 Mocha Moms is the best. I joined it when I lived out West and my kids were little and the organization was just getting started. I know many, many Jack and Jillers from growing up in DC. My mom wasn't into it and I've followed in her footsteps, but I'm not critical of those who do belong. Just being honest but it can be difficult for upper middle class black people and their families to connect in meaningful ways and that's the purpose it fulfills - not sure that's worth 8-10K per year though, plus all of the time it takes to participate.
