DH and I are split on joining Jack & Jill.
We have friends who have offered to 'sponsor' us and while we would like for biracial DD to have a larger network of children of color in this area, I would rather have her friendships grow organically (regardless of race). DH, who was born and raised here, attended a DC private school and wants DD to make "connections" in those circles now. I'm hoping to get honest responses from people who are familiar with J & J (even if they decided not to join) Thanks! |
| Oh here we go.... |
| What is Jack & Jill? |
An organization for elite, well education, rich light-skinned Black folks that historically discriminated against those of the darker persuasion. |
Oops... educated. |
| No way is this a real thing. |
most black folks in jack & jill that i know are brown to dark skinned |
|
OP -- it depends on if you can afford it..Jack and Jill ain't cheap...
if you plan on being involved...can take up time if you like the folks in the chapter you would be joining...if the folks are about doing things ...and have good activities...trips, workshops, little kid activities... especially in light of the cost of belonging.. I don't belong but one of my BF's belongs in a NOVA chapter and her chapter is very active...she usually invites me to the events she sponsors...girls night at her house...pumpkin carving, kennedy ctr play...i am not fond of the people in her chapter...but...they do have good activities...even did a cruise..look at it as networking for kids.. |
Key word = historically; notwithstanding the current color scheme, J&J isn't an organization that works for my family. I think there are tons of benefits for Black children but for me, the historical admittance policies (paper bag test) will never sit well with me. |
ok..ok...i am light-skinned and don't belong...just not my thing...no biggie |

Man Here,
I belonged in the 70/80s as a kid. My mom liked it and my dad hated it. Now I have a kid and am on the fence about joining. We live in the "lilly white" suburbs and It would be nice for my boy to meet other black kids but I don't think that DW and I could stand the drama. They should make a new Bravo Network show about Jack & Jill. |

| My ex from college was in it. He was medium brown skin. I had no idea that such organizations existed. It was truly eye openinig. He took me to a few events and the people I met were uppity. Im light skin black, almost white looking. FWIW. |
Great idea. It would be awesome to expose the organization's history and the real reason that the organization exists; separate the Black haves and have nots. |
| I was offered to be sponsored but I'm not sure I want to do this. I mean... the arrogance of some of the J&J members is more than I can stomach... The organization itself does not discriminate based on complexion any longer, but some of the children have been known to exclude and make fun of children with darker complexions. I know for a fact one young girl was being referred to as "Miss Celie." |
