School Opening Predictions for Tuesday?

Better than watching that orange one online or on tv. Barf.

Ever since yesterday's announcement that MCPS would be clearing and salting school properties TODAY, instead of giving their crews the day off for MLK, I think there's more chance of an on-time opening than a delay, despite the cold mornings this week. MCPS will likely consider that the coldest mornings will be on Wednesday and Thursday this week, not tomorrow; and that despite a terrible windchill, actual air temps might still not be problematic for buses to start, which is actually the criteria.

So I would plan for on-time openings all week.

I don’t think they will get anything from a delay. With a high of 20 tomorrow and 19 on Wednesday, it will not get above freezing to melt anything. Either they open on time both days or they close both days.

Delays are popular with teachers- that's what they get.

From what I understand delays aren’t that great for them either since there is no recess and maybe no breaks during the day with short lunch. But ok….

You mean not working for two hours and getting paid for the full day isn’t a break? Please.

(And I’m a teacher. Please don’t saddle this nonsense post on me and my colleagues.)

A lot of us just work the full day anyway, capitalizing on the rare 2 hours of extra work time. There are a lot of us who show up regular time on delay days for this very reason.

(And I’m also a teacher.)

We’re on the same page. Anyone who thinks teachers are filing their nails or eating bonbons on a “break” from students during the workday is sadly misinformed. I love my breaks from kids because it means I can do the other parts of my job in peace.

DP. Not bonbons but teachers are drinking starbuck drinks.

What the hell is your point? Now teachers can't pick up coffee before school? Truly out of touch with reality. No wonder everyone is quitting teaching.

Teacher pay is low. Brew at home

It really isn't.

It is compared to many of the students' families' earnings

Depending on the school, yes, if "low" just means "lower". But "many" does not mean "most."

Me again. I shoveled carefully last night and put down pet-safe salt, but most of my driveway is iced over because the surface is uneven and I couldn't entirely scrape it down. During my morning dog walk, I saw many shoveled sidewalks are very slippery or will become so when people crush the unshoveled snow. But I don't think this is a criteria for delaying opening, if the roads are clear. And they will be clear because the county trucks are out in full force.

Don't forget to scrape your car well ahead of your planned commute - it took me a longer while than I thought because the freezing rain had stuck the (paltry) layer of snow on it. It's amazing the difference between this weather event and the previous one, when it was so easy to shovel armfuls of light fluffy snow!

That's ridiculous. If cars are covered in snow school should be cancelled. Things will melt next weekend.

If they close tomorrow, they had better let child care programs operate in ES.

Community events are open after 11:00 am, building services workers are hard at work. MCPS will open and be on time!

Thank you to all the building service workers who are hard at work on a scheduled day off!

It’s easier to walk on the sidewalks that weren’t shoveled. The snow provides traction.

Isn't there another chance of snow next Mon and Tues?

mLK service day. Thank goodness it falls on the same day as inauguration. May good prevail!

I just took my dog for a walk and it is scary out there. The only safe space was where it had not been shoveled and we could walk on the snow. I feel bad for the building service workers today- clearing ice is not an easy task!

I was sliding even carefully watching the sidewalk. I can’t imagine navigating in the dark tomorrow morning. I am guessing delay just to allow kids to walk in sunlight.

Not sure I got that post, either. Yes, I occasionally pick up Starbucks as I head to school. Is that not allowed? Does that somehow make me a lazy teacher? I don’t get it.

Don’t try to get it. This site is infinitely more helpful if you remember than 10-20% of posts are by mentally ill people. Just ignore the nonsensical ones. Drink whatever coffee you’d like and thank you for your service.

Well, it’s winter. People should expect slippery conditions occasionally. We were low income for many years and my kids were still equipped for walking to school in such conditions… because I come from northern Europe and winter is a normal thing for me. I understand immigrants from tropical countries might not understand they need to budget for this, but at some point they need to learn.
