School Opening Predictions for Tuesday?

I was sliding even carefully watching the sidewalk. I can’t imagine navigating in the dark tomorrow morning. I am guessing delay just to allow kids to walk in sunlight.

Well, it’s winter. People should expect slippery conditions occasionally. We were low income for many years and my kids were still equipped for walking to school in such conditions… because I come from northern Europe and winter is a normal thing for me. I understand immigrants from tropical countries might not understand they need to budget for this, but at some point they need to learn.

Please shut up.

We got less than an inch of snow and people are seriously expecting two-hour delays tomorrow?

Conditions right now have nothing to do with snow. It’s about ice, which is deadly, and extremely low temps.

As well as today being a holiday when many people in apartments park on school lots rather than pay for parking. The email asking the community to move their cars is necessary.

+1

These temps are not normal for this area. Even adults are being advised to stay inside.

The ice has been there for a couple of weeks. Should school have been closed this whole time?

The cold temps do seem dangerous so I'd support a delay. But there should really be a policy. Like if the temp is forecasted to be below 10 degrees at 7am, that generates an automatic delay. That way people can plan. Like it or not, school delays and closures impact working parents, so if single digit temperatures are too cold for students to walk in they should announce right now.

Most of us understand that. But I'm not seeing vast expanses of ice, to be honest, and the temps in the morning will be slightly higher than that day MCPS closed for cold, years ago. The main criteria for school openings, which are the county clearing the streets and MCPS clearing school properties, will be checked by this evening. I'm thinking it will be just warm enough to start diesel engines tomorrow morning. So I'm not sure ice at bus stops, or on the way to school, will warrant a delay. I guess it could go both ways, and I will accept either decision. I cleared all my sidewalks, driveway and car last night and walk my dog in all weather, so we're ready to go if need be.

Did northern part of the county get any snow? We are in Bethesda and merely got a dusting.

I am surprised that it is really not that cold today. I do not think there is any windchill. It is 27 and the sun is very bright. Snow is melting on my roof. I was at the gym at 8:15 without issue. ---reporting from Rockville.

Same. Been out and about all day. The roads are fine. Just processed with caution. Bundle up. Schools should be open.

Disagree. Also in Rockville. I walked the dog and it’s definitely very cold out now with the wind as well.

Realize not everyone lives where you do and saw more than an inch.

Some areas got 3 inches. Most places got 1-2 inches.

The cold and ice are fine NOW. They're just going to be a slight question mark for predawn hours when buses need to start their engines on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning. That's all. I think that if there was just one cold morning, MCPS might err on the caution and announce a delay. But since we're facing three days of cold mornings... it's not rational, but psychologically, they might not want to delay one morning when the two others are going to be the same temps. And they won't want to delay all three. Sometimes, social psychology makes the decisions, not the actual events on the ground.

I'm in Silver Spring / Wheaton and we got about 2 inches on everything. It's very icey and cold.
