I thought it was good and I was surprised by the criticism. I'm a fan of the director (Susanne Bier). Her top four movies on rotten tomatoes are all worth a watch (in Danish). She did the Night Manager as well, which was good. |
I think a lot of what people didn't like was them not getting the campy aspects of it. The end in particular is very campy. So are all the tertiary characters -- the weird French "family friend" seducing one of the sons, the detective with the hangdog face acting as a foil for the rich sophisticates, all the drama at the book launch. It's not meant to be a serious drama.
That said I found it only so-so. I think Schreiber was the problem -- his face doesn't read as broad enough for this kind of humor and he wound up being a lynchpin. I thought Fanning was doing some good work and yet it also didn't really feel like it fit the tone of the show. I will say that I am glad Kidman seems to have either found a better derm or surgeon or decided to lay off a bit. The last two things I saw her in she was looking inhuman and she looked better in this one. Also a relief to see her playing the mother of adult children instead of toddlers which makes so much more sense and allowed her to play to her strengths as an actress a lot more. |
Dakota’s character still did the pill thing but she meant it for the woman her husband was cheating with and glasses switched or something. So she just stayed quiet. Something happened where NK’s character realized her DIL did it but kept it a secret for the sake of her family. That was the end. Also, in the book, the relationship between Amelia and Scooter was much more intense. They basically fell in love and I can’t remember if the ending was open such that they ended up together or might in the future. It made more sense and was a bigger conflict in the book. She actually had bags packed to leave the wedding and run away with scooter when the body was discovered. The dynamic between NK and her husband was similar - he was a blue blood, she made her own money but was now supporting the family. But they didn’t get into any prostitution past or a crazy brother. I enjoyed the show but the book made more sense. Neither one a classic or anything. |
This is a good analysis. I’m in the group of not liking the show, and agree with you it was because of the attempted campy aspects, but I enjoy a good campy show from time to time - this missed the mark. Campy needs some over the top exaggerations, such that you almost could imagine the actors cracking up on set when “cut” is yelled. This was just bad acting and writing. |
agree- this was lifetime movie bad, not fun soap opera camp |
Well, she’s Australian and sounded Australian part of the time and American at other parts. Her accent was definitely not the same as her “brother” in the movie as he used “lower class” phrases like “innit.” If the character decided to change her accent after marrying the blue blood, she’d go with a posh English accent or maybe an American one to erase the “lower class” English accent. That’s what would make sense to be accepted by society people. |
Why did the character of Amelia never have lipstick on? It became so noticeable. Like she would have eye makeup but always natural lips. |
The brown-haired actress is usually cast as the outcast, which she was at the start of the movie. She is not accepted by most of the blonde people, except for her fiancé. So, they wanted her to look plain or different from the rest. Dakota’s character also looked more natural. |
Eve Hewson does not fit the character, Amelia. However, most of the characters are awkward in their roles. Miscasting, poor writing, mediocre directing, poor makeup and hair. Give me Harper Island a thousand times over this. And, of course Revenge. |
the makeup for eve hawson was not well done. her bronzer is very noticeable. unless it was on purpose, but it is very distracting on screen...
other than that i feel like she is perfectly cast and does a wonderful job. the other character's makeups are ok! |
I know this is not really related, but is that a big deal? I never wear lipstick, even when I wear eye make up ![]() |
Just finished this. Thoughts, for what they're worth.
- Isabelle Adjani was there to make Nicole's facelift look well done (if still not natural). - Yes, the house was too interior-designed for an actual old money Nantucket house. We were able to put that down to Nicole's character, with the combination of her new money (married into it) and her need to control everything in her surroundings. - None of the ending twists were convincing, not even if you slap a "camp" label on them. The reveal about Nicole's character just seemed out of place with how cold she was, and they gave no hint her relationship with Tag was anything but cold in bed or anywhere else. The reveal about whodunnit made sense, but the writers were unable to sell it in just 20 minutes, instead it would have been more believable if they had dropped more hints about the motive (trust fund) earlier on. |
I started reading Elin Hilderbrand (I know I am years late!) books after watching this. Have now read a few and I don't think the show captures the essence of them at all. Yes, they are dreamy escapism, but they revolve more around island life, gorgeous landscapes, specific streets and restaurants, fun side characters. This was like a closed set play almost. It could have taken place anywhere coastal. |
Really bad actress, would not have been cast if she wasn't Bono's daughter. |
Netflix announced that season 2 is in the works. |
