San Franciso reparations

I’m not being disingenuous, but please provide stats regarding how many white people receive a $5 million inheritance. Thanks!

California - the granola state - the land of fruits, nuts and flakes. This plan could only happen there.

Go on Zillow. What’s what a safe house costs. Your inheritance stuff is secret but I see how rich whites are and they are RICH.

The cost may be steep and it may be a big economic shock, but it will allow millions of our fellow citizens to gain an equitable foothold in society.

You do realize that you can just give money directly to anyone, right? Why wait for the ineffective and racist government to dictate that you do so? I can provide my Venmo and I’m sure others will, too. Thank you in advance!

The money is there, and this country can surely reasonably identify those who are entitled to payments.

just like they identified everyone that legitimately needed ppp loans, or unemployment payments. If this means that black people will no longer be given special treatment or handled with kid gloves, then it might be an good thing. although most US residents' ancestors had nothing to do with slavery. so much f*ckery going on. only in democratic USA.

Lets assume you are right. If reparations passes in CA or SF, they will be no white people in CA or SF. Not a problem.

Not all homes in SF cost this much. Majority are smaller homes, with larger homes converted into condos. SF also isn't really "white" , and has seen tons of immigration. USA population increased significantly due to the recent immigration of the past decades after the Civil Rights movement. The talk of reparations at this point and one group of people owing the other is rather moot with all the waves of immigrations from all over the world in all the skin shades.

White people won't be paying reparations alone, it will fall on all the taxpayers who do not qualify, which includes AA taxpayers as well. It won't pass. They will keep lowering the amount and making it harder to qualify to make it more of a symbolic gesture where a few families will win a little lottery. They originally wanted 5 mil + 95K yearly income for 200 years per family. They lowered it down significantly to get to the "next stage", which is far from final stage. It has to pass, and more "studies and evaluations" will be ordered, and more committees started before anything will pass.

Im willing to state the "philosophical" argument against this. It is wrong to take property and cash from one group of people and give it to another group of people because of what their ancestors may or may not have done.

That's just for the starters There are so many more philosophical wrongs with this, and also deep logical flaws that nothing will ever happen that would be material enough and wouldn't cause riots and outright civil war. They are doing performative tiptoeing around this, but sure enough the amount will keep getting lower (it's already had been cut from 5 mil + income that was originally "approved"), and qualification criteria will get so difficult, that it will become a dog and pony show with a few lucky families winning a little lottery and being paraded as totems of "justice finally served".

Fair enough, but I’d still like stats, please. Thanks!

I always assumed that California was one of the few “safe” states for black Americans fleeing the South. Not realizing until recently that it was just as racist. With that being said, anyone who believes reparations will ever be paid is delusional.

Wrong. It’s a very left wing state. This will be paid, as it should be. There may be a handful of moderate Dems in the state assembly who say know, but the margins are huge, in favor of progressives.

How, exactly?
After 2 years of massive surplus, California is facing a $24B budget deficit.
Who will magically pay for this?

The billionaires who live there.

LOL. You think they are going to stick around to be milked by this ruse? Think again.

Sure, why not? They stick around now, even though it would be in their financial interest to relocate. And most are extremely liberal—thus, this is consistent with their values.

The billionaires are a lot less liberal than they appear. They are already moving operations out of CA.

So, I think it is 100% nuts that California, which was never a slave state, is going to force its non-black residents (who were not slave owners) to fork over billions of dollars to black residents (who were not slaves). Nevertheless, part of me is giddy about the prospect of this because it's basically a giant gift to the right. But then the other part of me thinks that is gross and sick to wish this kind of economic and social destruction on California. Even if it is self inflicted.

I'm happy CA is going down this path; their voters are basically getting what they voted for - good for them. They can hand over all their money to the govt and let them redistribute as they see fit. For the minority voters in CA who don't agree, you can either suck it up, or move.

I assume that the voters thought that they were voting for things like maternity leave and health care. So I don't really blame them. It's not like these politicians ran on "we are gonna take your money and burn this bish to the ground!!!"

That said, I blame anyone who sees this and continues to vote for it.

Right, because maternity leave and health care is also “free.” See how this works now?

Lots of liberals giving MAGA vibes in this thread. Hypocrites!
All this whataboutism for other groups of people. Newsflash! Slaves didn't volunteer for the all expense paid one way trip across the Atlantic. If you feel so strongly about other groups, then feel free to file a petition for reparations on their behalf. Nothing is stopping you from doing that.

Are they going to vote for a third-party candidate? Empty threat.

Let's see. American Indians have a claim as well. All women certainly have a claim. Irish, Italian, and Asian Americans have a claim, as Jewish and Muslim Americans do. Others. Not sure who is left. Moreover, the logic here is that, whenever a law has a disapportionate negative effect on a group of Americans, that group has a claim to reparations. Pretty soon, everyone will have a claim of some sort.

Correct! Truly benevolent people don't wait to be told to send money; they send money because they know its the right thing to do!
