Waterfall cardigans
Fitted jean jackets
Skinny jeans and colored jeans
The striped tshirts
The scarves
Dangly jewelry or anything like Kendra Scott

Get some wide leg, straight leg, or flared jeans. A pair of lug sole combat boots goes with anything, some platform white sneakers. Cardigans are cropped and chunky, jewelry is simple gold or silver. Switch to a middle part, I promise it looks fine on you and it will immediately update your style. Get a pair of tailored trousers, I like the ones at Abercrombie.

Buy neutrals. A well fitted tee in gray, black, white, tan. Pairs well with anything. Get some flared leggings for the weekend. Current tends are not as form fitting as the 2010s were, you’re going for a loose, casual fit. Cropped sweatshirts and oversized sweaters vs those prim and fitted ones from 2013.

I have tried everything you listed, and it all looks awful on me. The trends today are THE WORST, and I would rather look outdated than wear any of it. I will ditch statement jewelry for more delicate things but other than that… nope

Nah. You’re just older now and set in your ways. You’d be saying the same thing about skinny jeans and tunic style stops if you were 35 when they came into style.

Omg would you please stop talking about "skinny jeans and tunics"? No one is arguing for tunics. Tunics are not the only alternative to cropped boxy tops.

Who said anything about "boxy"? What will update your look is just simply shorter length tops -- those that hit at the natural waist or are tucked in. Chunky cardigans do seem to be trending, but I'm also seeing a lot of slim tops, particularly with wider and looser denim. Really tons of options! Remember, this thread is about what millennials can do to simply update their wardrobe a bit; no one is trying to be an uber trendy 22 year old, so no one is suggesting midriff bearing cropped sweatshirts and enormous distressed mom jeans or anything. A simple step to update - just pick a shorter top...make it something you like that flatters you, whether boxy, slim, etc...boom...just by no longer wearing a top that hits at your hips/thighs, you've updated your look!

two_scoops_of_style watch the videos. do it.

then go get some ribbed tops hahahahaaa

Interesting account, thank you! I guess I like these styles because they are so basic and ubiquitous at stores like Boden, JCrew, and Madewell. As an elder millennial, I'm finally able to admit that I'm usually ignored in public anyway, so these outfits just help me blend in even more. Not exactly great fashion, but good enough! haha

I do think their images from Paris are somewhat hilarious. I'd rather see what French women are wearing right now...I can go to any coffee shop in Arlington and see women wearing a floral maxi with a denim jacket.

Cool. So you'll stop talking about tunics?

I personally never mentioned tunics, but a couple PPs were indeed "arguing" for them, and I know plenty of 30 and 40-something women IRL who continue to wear them. Anyways, what kind of tops DO you wear/prefer?

Can we stop with elder millennial and geriatric millennial please? Such ageist nonsense. I’m 46 and have friends in their 50s. None of us feel invisible. We’re stylish and fit and have better taste in music. You all look like super basic clones.

I don't have a style. My clothes are clean and fit properly.

You aren’t even millennials so why do you care? Older millennial is a designation of the 1981-1989 Millennials vs the 1990-1997 millennials

Exactly— we’re GenX! Far superior! Less coddled. We invented diy.

I thank everyone for saving me from buying a tunic at Nordies. Personally, I welcome the return of the bootcut over skinnys as skinny does not work for curvy me. That having been said, skinnys work with tunics because one piece is flowing and the other is tighter. Tunics and bootcut = too much fabric.

I mean, there's a reason why Generation Z is copying us right?
But seriously maybe we feel smug because what happens to be trendy is an updated riff on what we wore when we were young.

1981 mom here. I like my clothes and have no intention of updating them. They're all good cuts and fabrics - linen, silk, good wool - and I like how I look and feel in them. Maybe this is how you know you're of a certain age - when you no longer care what's in?
