Except it hasn’t been wrapped up. As evidenced by the fact that they divorced then remarried an episode later, and were still technically married for the entire fourth season. I was also just rewatching the finale where midge referred to Joel as her husband in her set and said they were “still something.” But maybe they’re just bound to be complicated, like a Lucy/Desi dynamic. |
DP. I'm sorry to hear this, and also I'm admiring the fact she's working while having a chronic condition that could be debilitating. We love Rose and how Marin Hinkle portrays her. What a trouper. |
I mean it's been wrapped up in that this IS their relationship, and it's exactly as you've said: They are always going to be entwined with another. But any viewer thinking this show is going to end with the two of them together-- that's not going to happen. |
I agree. Though I finally watched the finale and I feel like Mei is going to be running for the hills (and maybe an abortion?) next season after Midge’s “pep talk” with her. |
I kind of just assumed she was going to have an abortion. I mean there were hospitals performing abortions in NY in the 50s. Plus she is in med school so I am sure she has connections. |
But if that was her plan why tell Joel and make him tell his entire family? Why hang out and lie to his mother, etc? |
|
I just watched the last one and it was good.
This show marked the beginning of COVID lockdowns etc and with the end of COVID, it seems appropriate that this show is over too. Tits up! |
It started in 2017 |
| Never got the hype about this show. Main character is a horrible narcissist. |
Me too! Her ex has matured and seems like a good man now while everyone else seems self-centered and obnoxious. |
You might be thinking of Ted Lasso? This show started long before COVID lockdowns. But I also thought they wrapped it up nicely. |
| just end this thing already. so bad. |
The structure of this last season is clever, different, and does a great job moving us toward an ending. I know some here dislike everything after about the first two seasons for some reason but I think they just don't like the fact Midge's comedy career didn't take off early and the whole series hasn't been just Midge and Susie being fabulous and successful. I like that things stalled and Midge has had to scramble for anything like a career (that's the most realistic part of the entire show, really). And for the person who hated "narcissist" Midge -- we don't have to like every character, or even the main character, in any show. How boring that would be, to watch only likeable characters all the time. As for Joel: At the very start of the series, I assumed he was only there as a plot device to cheat on Midge, fail at comedy, and prompt her to become her own person. Then I figured he'd pretty much be sidelined or disappear entirely. Nope, he's become something much more important than a mere plot device, and I think the writers did a wonderful job with subverting expectations about what Joel would be. The very, very brief mention by someone, in passing in a voice-over, that "he made sure his partner Archie was OK" -- that just blew me away. So loyal. (If you've seen the current season you will know what I mean.) |
| can’t stand Midge’s face and voice anymore. |

What happened that this show lost its charm? I really don't know. It was such a delight in the beginning - and such a slog at the end.
I thought the finale was good - it worked, that said. Spoilers below::::::: It seemed right that her kids weren't around. Her putting around that big house all by herself felt fitting - she got what she wanted, and she was alone. I'm glad that she and Suzie were close at the end. Their breakup really hurt! Theirs was the love story I was here for. And I really want Suzie's caftan and gold clogs. |
