just end this thing already. so bad.
The structure of this last season is clever, different, and does a great job moving us toward an ending. I know some here dislike everything after about the first two seasons for some reason but I think they just don't like the fact Midge's comedy career didn't take off early and the whole series hasn't been just Midge and Susie being fabulous and successful. I like that things stalled and Midge has had to scramble for anything like a career (that's the most realistic part of the entire show, really). And for the person who hated "narcissist" Midge -- we don't have to like every character, or even the main character, in any show. How boring that would be, to watch only likeable characters all the time. As for Joel: At the very start of the series, I assumed he was only there as a plot device to cheat on Midge, fail at comedy, and prompt her to become her own person. Then I figured he'd pretty much be sidelined or disappear entirely. Nope, he's become something much more important than a mere plot device, and I think the writers did a wonderful job with subverting expectations about what Joel would be. The very, very brief mention by someone, in passing in a voice-over, that "he made sure his partner Archie was OK" -- that just blew me away. So loyal. (If you've seen the current season you will know what I mean.)
