What does that mean???? No in person learning? Or is the teacher ill and no sub?

Sounds strange!

No, this is for the 16 that went virtual. One day teacher preparation and Monday off means school on Tuesday. Come on, people

We’re part of the 16. We get a 5 day weekend, followed by virtual instruction for the rest of next week, but we can’t travel or visit relatives because that defeats the purpose of going virtual. It’s depressing.

You are not quarantined. You can absolutely travel. My neighbors were all in the original 11. Lots of ppl zipped down to Florida or to ski areas for virtual week 2.

Instead had to set alarm at 7am and couldn’t fall back asleep.

FFS. I hope our school stops following MoCo

I would like an app that adjusts my alarm based on school delays or closures.

Kind of defeats a school closure when you still have to wake up at the save time anyways.

You should have reset your alarm last night for a couple hours extra sleep. Oops.

I agree. As much as it frustrates me since it's just raining, the forecast did call for accumulating snow right when the buses would be out running, kids walking and driving to school. The school systems can only rely on what the forecasters are calling for, and one kid in an accident is front page news.

Snow days are built into the calendar, and if they don't use them, they're out earlier in the summer. So they're going to be off one way or the other.

+1

They're damned if they do, damned if they don't. I don't envy the decision makers in this instance.

Indeed. Rush hour snows are the worst - too many cars on the road to get the plows out effectively. There's a long history in the area of really bad outcomes.

Imagine the total outrage if Larla had been stuck in a school bus for an hour or two this morning!

I'll gladly trade in one of our scheduled days off later this semester for a day away from everyone right now.

Aren’t we out of snow days / COVID days?

Are we going to start taking days from Spring Break?

??? If you're getting punished with virtual, you should be taking advantage to travel if you can.

This one was an LOL. They quite reasonably relied on the weather forecast and the forecast got it wrong. I’m not going to blame anyone for not being clairvoyant. Oh well.

Did the end of the marking period get moved? I read on a listserv that it was delayed but haven’t seen anything else about this.

They should not count on a waiver, and it doesn´t help HS students at all to tack on a day at the end of June.

I think they would say it's too late to make that change now, but they should have considered it at the last board meeting when we already had two known days to make up (now we have three).

I agree they will say it’s too late, although it really isn’t. I also suspect they privately weighed whether to use it to make up a day and got pushback bc it’s Lunar New Year. At the board meeting for next year there was discussion of whether a day off was needed for Lunar New Year next year even though next year it is observed on a weekend day. They determined a day off was not needed in that case, but I bet there were stakeholder discussions about this year.

Did not realize it was Lunar New Year. That said, don't mark the date with an M if they aren't going to use it. Are they just planning to use June 16th and 17th now? Those days do nothing for learning loss, of course. Or do you think they actually consider using using April 1? MCPS should know better to wait for further snow to act.

MCPS is at least consistent in its refusal to plan ahead for anything.

Are you kidding. You can thank our legal system for making it so easy to sue. Everyone has to play it extra cautious or you get hit with lawsuits which result in big payouts.

But why didn't they cancel school last night then? Why at 7am or whatever?? My daughter was about leave.

Not really since they made the call to close at 7am when it was clearly raining outside. i could have understood if they made the call late yesterday to close like other counties had based on the info on hand at the time and then couldn't reverse the decision, but they announced a delay then literally looked out their windows at 6:30/7am, saw rain, and changed the delay to closure. I mean I could even look on my weather app at the time to see the temp is above freezing and no snow in the forecast, as of 7am. so they get zero empathy from me on this one.

What a complete waste of yet another day of instruction. Lazy. And late call for those that need to actually be at work.

For RAIN.

No.
Wrong.
They are supposed to check the weather conditions at 5am. If it's NOT SNOWING they are supposed to have school.

If it STARTS SNOWING during the school day they are supposed to evaluate the roads and consider early release

This was completely inline with the inept way the district is being run.
