Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
Parents were given a choice between in-person instruction and the virtual academy — there was no option for in-person when you want it and virtual when you don’t. MCPS is committed to in-person as much as possible. No virtual snow days. The real crime here is that the virtual academy closes on snow days. |

Geez, people.
I think this was the wrong call, but not egregious based on the info they had. Still no one else acknowledging the bus driver situation? The other snow days and delays... maybe one other one was a little overreactive? MCPS has always closed for what most think are non-emergent conditions (AGAIN, I'm speaking GENERALLY-- today was particularly silly in the end). I'm starting to get the vibe that some people are SO anti-virtual that they are almost pro-COVID ("Let's all get it and get it over with!") or so extreme anti-closing schools that they are overreacting to what is basically MCPS SOP plus maybe 1) one questionable delay or closure that should have been a delay plus 2) today's closure that should have been no more than a delay. People are being way too conspiracy-minded. Hanlon's Razor, y'all. Or maybe it's less "stupidity" than another explanation... like the BUS DRIVER SHORTAGE. Or maybe the last two winters were so mild and relatively snow-day-free that you've forgotten how this generally works. |
+100. Most of you live in La La land. There is a bus driver shortage and many recent hires who might be inexperienced in winter weather conditions. Weather forecasting is hardly an exact science. If weather ended up being bad and one bus got stuck or had an accident, everyone would have jumped on MCPS casting blame. Also, some teachers who live in other districts would have not come in and there are no subs. Also, Covid is still an issue. Sorry that you are inconvenienced but grow up already. |
| Everyone needs to chill out. In my 3 decades at MCPS, this is not the first time they made the call too early based on the forecast. These things happen. They are damned if they don’t make the call and it snows, but damned if they don’t and it doesn’t snow. So many conspiracy theories. Calm down. |

They should have just canceled last night like every other county in the dmv.
Instead had to set alarm at 7am and couldn’t fall back asleep. FFS. I hope our school stops following MoCo |
I would like an app that adjusts my alarm based on school delays or closures. |
| Teacher just sent an email saying no classes until 1/25. Our school was one of the 16. |
| I think the call was silly but my DD says she hates delayed start days because they cut recess? So she was happy to just go to aftercare for the day and play. |

MCPS has been making bad weather delay and closure decisions for years. This is pretty consistent with past practice. However, we also know how eager they are to effectuate a COVID “pause” so it doesn’t seem unreasonable that they are also looking for excuses to close and that influenced their decision making.
What is a more serious issue and the subtext for a lot of this discussion is that MCPS as an institution has pretty systematically destroyed their own credibility with parents over recent years through a penchant for dissembling and disingenuousness and lack of transparency. As a result, no one trusts them or believes what they say about anything and for good reason. It’s an institution that has burned all of its credibility. |
What does that mean???? No in person learning? Or is the teacher ill and no sub? Sounds strange! |
| The irony is most teachers were hoping this wouldn’t be a snow day. Unfortunately the timing at the end of the semester makes it a tough day to miss, particularly with the snow days earlier in the month. |
No, this is for the 16 that went virtual. One day teacher preparation and Monday off means school on Tuesday. Come on, people |
oh got it- forgot Monday was a professional day. |
+1,000 Kind of defeats a school closure when you still have to wake up at the save time anyways. |
We’re part of the 16. We get a 5 day weekend, followed by virtual instruction for the rest of next week, but we can’t travel or visit relatives because that defeats the purpose of going virtual. It’s depressing. |
