Agree. Plus my kids were supposed to have tests today which could have raised their grades for the semester.

For an on-time school day, they need to know by 5 AM that conditions will be safe for buses between 6 and 9:20.
For a 2-hour delay, they need to know by 7 AM that it will be safe between 8 and 11:20.

Given the forecast, I don't think the county could have been certain of those things at the necessary times. I think it's likely that the snowfall will turn out not to be an issue, but I think MCPS (and all the other local school systems) were in a tough place given the timing and forecast.

Agreed. No good reason why today couldn’t have been virtual.

Oh no! 1 inch! We're snowed in!!

This January has been a complete loss educationally. We're done with MCPS.

Yeah no

Seriously, why not? HS kids have lost so much instruction time and kids have major end of quarter tests today. If 16 schools are virtual anyway with no advanced notice, there is ZERO reason MCPS as a whole cannot be virtual today.

You are kidding right? Ask your HS student what they think of virtual. Most kids will log on but play games on the side, etc. Even college kids hate virtual.

DP.

Pp has a point. Perhaps we close high schools but have the elementary schools open earlier.

Or make HS and MS go virtual, which is easier for the older grades, and have the ES start early

I thought Jack Smith said that snow days in the future were going to be a thing of the past now that we know we can do virtual, if needed. Why didn't MCPS work on that. Disappointing.

It’s in the teachers’ contract that they get 1 day to prepare for virtual. So should they have been off yesterday to prepare?

The state doesn’t count virtual days as school days. Blame Hogan. This was his idea to put leverage on schools to stay in person.

European here - this is ridiculous! It is raining in Bethesda and no school? Why don't they at least do virtual? I just don't get it.

I received the same text, after receiving the school is closed text. It must be a mistake, I doubt they can close schools and then retract.
