This is WRONG and so unfair to his kids. Three got in on their own. The Yale soccer coach offered to accept a bribe for the fourth. Mr. Tobin exposed it. Mr. Tobin was not charged in the college admissions case because he did not take part in it (although he has other legal issues). Both of my kids know his. They are smart and were accepted on their merits. Of course, now they have to deal with not only the shame of their dad's other actions and his ties (being the tipster) on this case, and people like you questioning their right to be at Yale.

Sounds more like how Jared got into Harvard.

Bingo. Bullshit that scumbag criminal’s kids got into Yale fair and square.

Although one is a criminal act, and the other is legal, I'm not seeing a lot of daylight in paying millions of dollars to pay for a building to get your under qualified kid in and paying millions to a consultant to get your under qualified kid in.

We are talking about people w millions of dollars - $50M plus in wealth. What do they have left? Bragging rights that their spawn are quite bright. Else if their spawn is seen as stupid, then gasp, maybe they are too and it was just luck that they got their fortune. They can buy whatever they want. And supposedly they couldn’t buy college admissions so by having their kids being admitted to top colleges, they can brag among their friends.

Naive and apparently not a consumer of the news. There have been loads of such cases over the years.

Ok, I guess I just haven't had the time to read all the news about college admissions scandals over the years. "Loads of cases"? Really? I am just trying to live my life and raise my kids, just a regular person with regular friends and a regular life. Oh well.

Actually you are at worse stupid... and at best uniformed. Just like the pushy parents killing themselves at STEM schools like that is all one has to do. How can you "raise" kids equipped for life if you are completely blind to what is going on.

What now? What’s your problem?
My kid is in a Stem magnet because he loves science. I didn’t push him into it and I don’t see it as a ticket to a top 20 school. What’s more he is not alone. Most of his friends are really into Math/Science/Comp Science. They love what they do. Many are also good at other things. Some are incredible musicians, 1/3 are varsity athletes, some love to write or paint. Most are also highly social and they support each other . Yes they work hard but they are not one dimensional or socially awkward or whatever stereotype you have in your head. Luckily for ds there are plenty of schools in the top 50 that value academic excellence and don’t fill a huge chunk of their incoming class with hooked kids.

People like us have no rights to question the merits of people like him and his kids? I think we have the right to question everyone at this point. Who can be trusted anymore?

I thought Tobin got out of being charged in Varsity Blues roundup because he tipped off the FBI. Immunity deal. How do you know older girls were not part of it?

Why would the coach approach Tobin unless Tobin has done it before for his other kids? You think the coach would just be so stupid as to randomly approach someone? There has to be past history.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!

Exactly. You think someone who never smoked crack could just hand over a crack distribution conspiracy to the FBI? Not a chance.

Tobin is a Yale alum. His kids had legacy preferences no matter what. So it's not like the playing field was ever equal for them anyway.

The hardest thing is getting in. PP said their kids knew Tobins kids and Tobin kids were smart. Sure, so are hundred of other kids. But would Tobins kids have gotten in on their own without greasing the palm of the coach? Not all legacies kids get in. So what was different w Tobins kids? Had to be bribes else why would coach approach Tobin for another bribe for another kid? There has to a pattern or history of Tobin doing this.

NP. This is a good point.
Although, they could have also gotten in without bribery and relied on his alumni relationships alone.
We don't know.
This is what we do know: It's virtually impossible getting into Yale even IF you're super super smart. I'm sure she got a leg up, as do almost all legacy kids who end up at Ivies.

In the indictment, Singer is quoted as saying that his wealthy clients wanted a guarantee.

Tobin was probably aware that even qualified legacy students don't automatically make it in.

Bribing the coach is also far cheaper than endowing a building.

PP here. You think he bribed the coach? Then why would he expose all this? I don’t care either care either way, I’m just curious/trying to understand.

Yes. The indictment says he bribed the coaches to tell the admissions office that the students were outstanding athletes, and they wanted them on their teams. Typically coaches get a certain number of slots for recruits, even when no scholarships are offered, so long as the students meet the minimum admissions standards.

Singer was busted, as a result of one of his parent clients ratting him out (the parent client was himself arrested for securities fraud, and offered up Singer in hopes of reducing his own sentence). Singer started cooperating with the prosecutors in hopes of getting a lighter sentence. He's been cooperating for months, has turned over his files, was on a wire when talking to clients which FBI was monitoring.

So what is Yale and all these colleges doing about kids admitted under false or fraudulently? What about the Tobin kids?

Some of the Tobin kids have already graduated. One is in medical school now.

USC has said they will consider each case individually, to try and determine which students knew about it and which were complict.

I don't know if others have shared their next steps beyond firing the named coaches or placing them on leave.

It appears that she went out of her way to fool her son so he wouldn't know. And he has to read the transcripts of what she said about him. I feel sorry for the kids that were not involved.

I do feel sorry for him as well. Way a horrible person Buckingham is to put his future and reputation at risk.

This was about Tobin, not about Singer. Tobin had an offer from the Yale women's soccer coach, maybe not connected to Singer, but hadn't bribed him. When Tobin was nailed for stock fraud, he tipped the FBI to the Yale coach and taped the coach telling him how much it would cost to have his daughter slated as a soccer recruit and paid the coach a down payment with FBI money. Then the FBI flipped the coach who turned them onto Singer. So, Tobin did not bribe the coach for this daughter, but who knows about his older kids.

To add details to her situation, her teenage daughter, Lilia, is an aspiring actress, social media star, and best friends with Maddie Ziegler (Dance Moms) and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things). She’s only 15. I bet her mom was planning on repeating this with her in a couple years.
