Tobin is a Yale alum. His kids had legacy preferences no matter what. So it's not like the playing field was ever equal for them anyway.

The hardest thing is getting in. PP said their kids knew Tobins kids and Tobin kids were smart. Sure, so are hundred of other kids. But would Tobins kids have gotten in on their own without greasing the palm of the coach? Not all legacies kids get in. So what was different w Tobins kids? Had to be bribes else why would coach approach Tobin for another bribe for another kid? There has to a pattern or history of Tobin doing this.

Agreed. I'm not saying his kids are geniuses. I don't know anything about them. Just saying that for every Tobin kid that we're reading about now, there are hundreds of others, with rich parents and well-connected legacies greasing the wheels. It's the tip of the iceberg.

Of course, because when you visit a campus, do you not notice names on the buildings, or lecture series or professorships, etc? All those are $$$ who donated, their kids go to private schools, play a sport and are recruited to HYP and Stanford. None are national caliber athletes - if they were, there would be no need of a donation. But it is a “legit” side door for the wealthy families to get their kids in. Which is why I don’t understand why Felicity H. with her Yale legacy that goes back generations didn’t do it this way - a celebrity w $1M donation could get into Brown or Yale.

Because they said they wanted absolute certainty their kid would get in. What with all the other celebrity, alums, CEOs, politician's, diplomats, billionaire kids to compete with they paid.

She would have gotten absolute certainty by working w the colleges’ development offices. Didn’t you read the Brown emails scandals? I think what she was lacking was a good private school college counselor w contacts.

It does not say the other names will come out. It could have been part of Singer’s deal to give up a small number and let him protect certain hundreds of other people.

The names that came out could just be the people who were dumb enough to admit to having done it on a wiretapped phone. Perhaps the rest of the people didn’t confess to past fraud when the guy called them out of the blue.

Singer also had an obstruction of justice charge because he tipped off some people that he had been busted.

This is what I don't get - why WOULD you trust someone like this unless you know him personally? Why trust anyone that you don't know personally. I wouldn't trust someone just because they have money or come from old money or don't come from money. Net worth just doesn't enter into the equation regarding trustworthiness - nor, for that matter, whether he's a doctor, lawyer, or private equity partner. Do I know you? Have you proven yourself trustworthy? Yes, ok.

Felicity the actress was arrested at her $35 million dollar LA house. That's the kind of wealth we're talking about. Not upper middle class making a few hundred grand a year.

Yes, but it's the UMC whites and Asians who have created this problem. With private schools, 10 AP's, segregated schools, test prep, and tutors ... they have created an unhealthy environment for kids to try to compete for college spots.

The poors have been saying it for year... the process is broken and favors the rich. The whole process favors kids in high ranking schools and money to learn outside of school.

I’m not sure I follow your reasoning. The hallmark of the UMC is that they follow the rules. They are grinders. That usually is what keeps them UMC instead of rich. The counselors and AP exams and tests and private schools are all a direct reaction to the increasing demand from the top colleges for increasingly perfect students. But this is wildly different from breaking the law, which is what these rich parents did. The rich weren’t beating the UMC at their game. They were playing by a very different set of rules. A different game altogether.

If anything comes out of this scandal it’s the sudden and very open realization that the rich are playing by a very different set of rules. And that these colleges probably knew about it but looked the other way. It made it very clear that meritocracy, which is the moral belief of the upper middle classes who define themselves by their own hard work, is a sham at these colleges. It has definitely weakened the value of the top colleges. This upper middle class person is thoroughly disgusted by it all,
