As a Dem I think their shutdown strategy of holding the line on premiums is a losing one.

Like it or not, the GOO has the upper hand with Trump at the helm. Sooner or later, the govt needs to reopen. The shut down creates a distraction for Trump and proj 2025 to leverage opportunities. A lot can happen in the shutdown with him as Pres, legally or not.

The better strategy is to use the leverage of anger when GOP increases costs to bring more folks to the Dem side. If you are a Dem, you support what they are doing but those independents and GOP folks are who you want to convince. The way to do that is not to inflict more pain and ultimately lose this fight but to jet the pain happen and say - hey vote for us instead!

The only thing happening now is pain for all. This is nothing but a damn show out in by the Dems to court public favor- to say hey - aren't we cool?! They are not. I put money on the fact that the only people who will be backing down to reopen the govt will be Dems as GOP are clearly anti gov. This is exactly what they want. As long as the right people get paid - those in their side - they win.

This whole mess is the Dem debacle and I'm a Dem. This is just not the right fight to have. Not at all. They will end up in a weaker position than the start because they won't have gained anything.

This is how Trump win the Presidency - they built a org, a momentum, a team, a cause. It's what the Dems should be doing. What's going on now is the people working separately from political leadership and that's what the Dems need to fix.

The democrats are seen as the ones shutting down the gov. They are the holdouts. They will get the blame because they are in the minority.

The entire gop is not going to be convinced especially since they have the numbers. The Dems will have to compromise if the govt is to be reopened. The gop knows this. And will push this to its limits.

No. The republicans can pass the bill they wrote if they want to. Or they can negotiate with the democrats. And as a democrat and federal employee I am not content to wait for the public to figure out it’s the republicans screwing them on healthcare costs. If the public had been able to figure that out, we wouldn’t be here. And everything the admin is claiming it is being forced to do because of the shutdown (firing Feds, cutting programs for people who need help) is the same exact firing and cutting they’ve been doing ANYway. Thank you democrats, for not caving.

No one cares about ACA subsidies. It’s a bad hill to die on. They should have picked something more strategic. It’s made the Democrats look out of touch and nonsensical. Maybe something like the Epstein files or another issue, but the temporary ACA subsidies from COVID seem so random and unrelated to anything about funding the government or what people actually care about. The left’s people are now supposed to care about it, but no one really does. It’s a bad play.

Why do only Dems need to compromise? In order to pass a budget, the House needs to send the Senate something that can get 60 votes. Usually that's accomplished by bipartisan compromise within the House. Kevin McCarthy did this in 2023. Mike Johnson himself did this last year. Yet this time around Johnson is expecting the Senate to act as rubber stamp for the one bill he was willing to pass before taking his members and going home. The longer he keeps the House out of session the more blame Mike Johnson will get for the shutdown.

You miss the point. They don't have to compromise. They need to find a fight they can win. They cannot win this stalemate because very simply - the other side doesn't need the shutdown to end!!! Don't you people get it?

It doesn't matter how many people blame the GOP. Ultimately, as a Dem, I believe in a govt. it's really clear to me Trump and gang don't really see this as a positive. They want their kind of govt.

So the Dens need to play strategically and let this one go. Let some stuff go bad so you can blame the Republicans! You have to fight to win the war. Not just the battle.

But what fight can they win? Thanks to recission, the GOP needs only 50 votes to claw back funding that was approved with 60 votes. Schumer and Jeffries see this as their last stand.

Ugh. They are fools then.
Guarantee Dems will back down. There is no other way. Or else we just have a shutdown till the end of time!

Don't any of these people play poker?!

There is zero reason Rep need to cave on this since the military is being paid. The admin don't want the ATC folks who call in sick. Their whole plan is to spin everything into chaos. So they can remake the shape of govt. For the Dems to die on their swords for ACA is simply not big enough of a sacrifice for what's coming for everyone.

This is just not the right way to stick to their guns. The only way they win is if the Rep shoot themselves in the foot which is entirely possible of course but I don't know... all this pain.

For one paycheck, and not the National Guard at all. That's all they have resources to cover. Where's that second paycheck coming from?

No one cares about subsidies? People don’t care about their health care? About their costs? What are you smoking?!
Of course, Trump is always free to unveil that plan he’s been working on for 10+ years.

DP here. But this is the thing - let the prices rise so people see Trump and Rep for who they are. All the Dems do is mess up. They will need to fold because they have no hand to play. Worst, they won't get credit from anyone other than their own side on this. MAGA will just blame Dems for all of this. Just let MAGA see first hand what they would suffer through without trying to protect them.

They don’t need to fold for that to happen. At least if they don’t fold, it will show they didn’t support the increase.

You are wrong. Budget bills only require 50 votes, cannot be filibustered.

Um, the whole reason we are in this shutdown right now is that a budget bill cannot get 60 votes in the Senate.

Excuuuuuuuse me, but that's "a concept of an idea of a plan."

Meanwhile, in Idaho people are writing their (Republican) Senator because they just realized their monthly healthcare bill will go from $51 to $2232.

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/idaho-kicks-affordable-care-act-open-enrollment-premiums-are-set-rise-rcna237298
Idaho kicks off Affordable Care Act open enrollment as premiums are set to rise nationwide:
About 25,000 Idahoans are likely to drop their coverage for next year when enhanced subsidies expire

Many Idahoans will have to decide whether they’ll be able to afford coverage once the enhanced subsidies that kept premiums lower for many middle-class families expire at the end of the year.

Bob McMichael, 63, and his wife, Leslie, 62, already know they won’t.

Both are retired and make about $42,000 a year. They currently pay $51 a month for their ACA plan. Late last month, they got a notice that their monthly premium would increase to $2,232 next year without the subsidies.

This timing isn't great for the GOP. Shame about that.

Hmm. Wonder who they voted for?

Yes, I agree. Let the prices rise so people can see just how much the innocent tax payer is kicking in for complete strangers to have ACA.

DP. Oh, for sure. I myself enjoy being the only developed country where this isn't taken care of at a societal level. I look forward to children turning blue and dying from asthma attacks outside ERs, having hospitals charge me more because the ERs are hemorrhaging money, and the like. There's a reason we pay more per capita for healthcare than any other developed country -- and have worse outcomes, and I like it like that! Bring it on.

The GOP can drop the filibuster and pass it. Since the GOP doesn’t seem to feel that the constitution governs anymore, it’s odd they are sticking to this one rule. If I were a betting person, I’d say it’s because they know it’s a disaster and want to blame the Democratic Party. It seems wise for the Democratic Party to steer clear of this steaming pile of crap. The GOP owns it all.

^^PS: People without insurance still get healthcare in the US, PP. They are just limited to getting it only through the Emergency Rooms, where it is less effective, astronomically more expensive, and without appropriate follow-up.

And you still pay for it. You just get to pay MORE for it. Congratulations!
