My unpopular opinion..
As a Dem I think their shutdown strategy of holding the line on premiums is a losing one. Like it or not, the GOO has the upper hand with Trump at the helm. Sooner or later, the govt needs to reopen. The shut down creates a distraction for Trump and proj 2025 to leverage opportunities. A lot can happen in the shutdown with him as Pres, legally or not. The better strategy is to use the leverage of anger when GOP increases costs to bring more folks to the Dem side. If you are a Dem, you support what they are doing but those independents and GOP folks are who you want to convince. The way to do that is not to inflict more pain and ultimately lose this fight but to jet the pain happen and say - hey vote for us instead! The only thing happening now is pain for all. This is nothing but a damn show out in by the Dems to court public favor- to say hey - aren't we cool?! They are not. I put money on the fact that the only people who will be backing down to reopen the govt will be Dems as GOP are clearly anti gov. This is exactly what they want. As long as the right people get paid - those in their side - they win. This whole mess is the Dem debacle and I'm a Dem. This is just not the right fight to have. Not at all. They will end up in a weaker position than the start because they won't have gained anything. This is how Trump win the Presidency - they built a org, a momentum, a team, a cause. It's what the Dems should be doing. What's going on now is the people working separately from political leadership and that's what the Dems need to fix. |
| ^to be clear, my prob with fighting this with FIL is that Dems can't win. The Dems are interested in govt working, the other side is not. The Dems have no leverage in the larger scheme of things and it's why this shut down differs from others - the other side is fine with the shut down because a shut down does not actually shut down everything. |
At least one person finally understood this. |
As an independent, this take seems off to me. Both Johnson and Thune are starting to get antsy. It's not surprising that Johnson might be flailing - he is going to lose the Speakership, the only question is how quickly the day will come -, but now Thune is too. |
| What are the signs that Johnson will lose the speakership? Who is the opposition? |
|
Maybe the Democrats need to pivot. Continue calling out the lies, the GOP's false claims that it was about "free shit for illegals" and just pass the CR and let people suffer on healthcare, making it clear that the Republicans are the ones to blame.
Millions of Americans will see their insurance costs double and triple or lose coverage, et cetera. Highlight that and shout it from every rooftop - the reason their insurance went up or went away is because Republicans lied and said it was all for illegals. |

Chris Murphy: "This is a country that's falling apart because Trump is in the middle of an authoritarian takeover. We're not on the verge of an authoritarian takeover. We're in the middle of it ... I have no moral obligation to vote for a budget that literally funds the destruction of our democracy"
This is the right response, IMO. There is no reason for the Dems to support the destruction of our country and certainly not the BBB which they had zero input on whatsoever. If the GOP wants to abandon what is left of our checks and balances, then they should go for it. |
Yes. Johnson and Thune got lazy and assumed some of the Ds would continue to bail them out. Also. Johnson and Thune probably didn’t expect Trump to own the shutdown as completely as he has. |
This is called win the battle lose the war. The Dems only play this strategy whereas the GOP always strive to win the war. I'm a Dem and this is why it's sad to be one. The shutdown is a battle. Not the war. It feels super nice feeling noble until you realize that it doesn't actually move you from A to B. You need to motivate, leverage and change. Not talk. |

Why fund a government for someone who has demonstrated is going to ignore the appropriations anyway?
Government funding should be contingent upon impeaching Trump. |
This is what I think. |
Which is basically what Senator Murphy said above. |
The democrats are seen as the ones shutting down the gov. They are the holdouts. They will get the blame because they are in the minority. The entire gop is not going to be convinced especially since they have the numbers. The Dems will have to compromise if the govt is to be reopened. The gop knows this. And will push this to its limits. |
And releasing the Epstein files. |
No The Dems are in the minority. They have no power. Republicans just can’t agree among themselves to pass anything. |
