US has no good options in Ukraine

Wasn't Biden supposed to be a Ukraine expert? Wasn't he going to rebuild our relationship with our NATO allies?

Of all foreign policy issues it seems like this is one he would be able to handle like a pro.

Why does it look like more uncoordinated flailing?

Biden is a fumbling mess and quite temperamental and rash just like Trump and this is from Obama insiders /staff who worked along with him during Pres Obamas term in office. Hillary was far more liked and respected despite the bad blood from the campaign

You haven't been paying attention then. Blinken and Biden have done a great job. NATO and our alliances have been working very closely and our stronger than theyve been in a decade. We'll hold the line. Putin has failed and unfortunately the people of Russia (and Ukraine) are the ones that will suffer.

Appreciate any insight or perspective for the rationale behind this.

My guess is sovereign immunity/head of state doctrine.

I think it’s negotiating tactics. You have to leave something on the table to provide an off-ramp. If you play all your cards right away what do you have left to gamble with. I think the president is playing it pretty cool right now and I’m not a fan of his as I’m farther to the left economically - I haven’t really cared for his middle of the road approach domestically.

Nah, Putin's a lost cause. There's only three options for him now, the Hague, killed by his own oligarchs or to become Xi's vassal. They might be trying to peel off some oligarchs by making them alone feel the pain for Putin's folly though

I don’t think Putin has an account labeled V Putin sitting in some foreign bank somewhere. He’s a civil servant not an oil baron. Besides, he owns a whole country so it’s not like he needs a chateau in France or whatever the oligarchs spend their money on. He’s old school Kremlin corrupt—no need to have a big bank account when everyone just has to give you whatever you want (like a mansion or a super bowl ring).

Nobody is sure how much money he has. Some think it's as high as 200 billion. https://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/31/financier-bill-browder-says-vladimir-putin-is-worth-200-billion.html

I can only think that the hasty, botched American withdrawal from Afghanistan has emboldened just about every arch-villain on the planet, from Putin rubbing his little T _rex hands together over Eastern Europe, to China making googly eyes at Taiwan. Why not, they've wrecked Hong Kong and need a new project. #shame.

My understanding is the richest man in the world. He has raped Russia for 20 years. Of course some of that has to be in outside holdings-I'm sure he's diversified and has fingers in many, many pies.

We turned our backs on Ukraine. A democracy led by a President who, though not perfect, had worked to protect the interests of our NATO allies and the United States (while being undermined by Trump, Bannon, and the rest of the Republican-led Putin fan club).

This quote below from Zelensky to the Ukrainian people is so heartbreaking. Shame on the west, shame on Trump and the GOP (why do you love Putin more than Democracy), and shame on Biden for not being more authoritative at this critical time.

“This morning, we are defending our country all alone,” Mr. Zelensky said Friday, wearing a military sweatshirt. “The most powerful nations of the world are just watching from afar. Only solidarity and decisiveness by Ukrainians will be able to preserve our freedom and our state.”

And for those who say, who cares about Ukraine. What does that have to do with us in the States. Remember who Putin is and what he’s after. He’s after the end of Democracy and the demise of the US. It will be at your doorstep one way or another unless he is stopped now.

A new warm water port for Russian export of energy products is a curious definition of loss. Sanctions will be short term. The world needs oil for at least the next twenty years.

Trump???? HAHAHAHA. After all they paid Biden’s kid, I bet they thought they bought Biden and family. Trump was the one who sent them the weapons they are using.

You people need some serious mental help.

You do realize that Trump tried extorting Zelensky for military aid? And per the Javelins, Trump only okayed those grudgingly and then put restrictions on where the weapons could be placed (in the west) that undercut their ability to be used in the exact scenario Ukraine finds itself in today.

You need to stop sucking the propaganda pipe. Trump undercut Ukraine and further fortified Russia - we are now seeing what that reaped.

I realized it was reported that Trump tried extorting Zelensky. There is a lot of reporting on Trump that we are now finding out is false. No surprise there. You can keep blaming whoever you want to blame, but Putin made his move under Biden’s reign. He must have thought it was the right time to do so, as well as the right time to threaten the US and Europe with nukes. He clearly saw weakness.

This is what’s crazy to me.

How can we let Putin roll into Ukraine and just take it? Does anyone believe he will stop at just Ukraine? Why would he when it’s so easy to just take it?

He has nukes, and he’s not afraid to use them. I’m convinced he has a terminal diagnosis and is pulling the trigger on his long term plan to rebuild now because he has nothing to lose. If you’ve watched him speak recently, it’s clear he’s not going to back down.

We should have helped Ukraine as soon as Russia started firing missiles. Now the US looks weak to Russia as well as Ukraine and the rest of the world who assumed we would help.

Not without significant bloodshed.

The only solution is regime change in Moscow…but it’s doubtful Russian people can do it alone.
