Admissions to change at Thomas Jefferson High, and others

If TJ admissions is racist, so is AAP (test scores, parent appeals, GBRS, outside private testing, parent-requested principal placement in Level IV) - why are you not suggesting that AAP be "closed" "thrown out" or an "embarrassment to FCPS." Sure sounds like you are interested in protecting the institution that your child benefits from but not the one they can't get into...

Note that the NAACP meeting with Dr. Braband was not all about TJ - it was about school discipline, PARENT APPEALS for AAP, test scores, etc. You folks are the ones focused only on one symptom of the systemic racism in FCPS - TJ - but not the people in charge, luckily.

So are you arguing for AAP reform, which is certainly on the horizon (even though AAP participation is not as skewed as TJ admissions), or is this just your go-to “what about-ism“ to try and quash discussions about TJ?

+1

I cannot believe that there is not more outrage about this. I know race is the hot topic right now, but the lack of access for girls into TJ has been a problem for YEARS. Only 40% of the students are female, but almost 50% of the applicants are female.

And fixing the gender disparity problem is something that the school board can easily fix. Its low hanging fruit school board members! AND it does not have the same legal hurdles of implementing race-based admissions standards.

I'm a female, and non-Asian, but I wouldn't want dumbed down standards in the name of getting more people like myself admitted. If I can't get in on my own merits, I don't want to go. Not only might I find myself out of my league academically, but I'll have a stigma on my back.

Nope - I absolutely support reform at TJ - wrote my SB rep about it and sent in a question to the Minority Oversight Achievement Committee! I also, however, support reform for AAP - I think that you cannot disconnect reform in AAP from reform at TJ. Do you think they are unrelated?

look it's parenting. It is not the job of the government to get more black and hispanic farms families to read to their children more and engage with them more from 0-3

Heck it starts even before that with nutrition and care during pregnancy

Folks this is why you will never close the achievement gap. Move on die on another hill

And this is why we will continue to have protests. Nasty racists who just don’t get it. Go back to your hole.

facts aren't racist feel free to keep on protesting but ignoring reality is just dumb.

It’s disgusting that you try to blame inequality on “bad parenting”.

Seems like your own parents failed, big time.

I am dumbfounded at how blatantly Asians are being attacked. It's funny because the same ppl attacking them because of having too many Asians in AAP and TJ, will ask for their solidarity in the name of racial diversity.

Btw, whoever spoke of segregation before, I think the Asians are the ones being segregated at TJ. They should be the ones to be concerned with a system created to facilitate their isolation at TJ.

I think both need reform, and in parallel. I don't want to see AAP reform be used an an excuse to leave TJ alone while the board waits for a cohort of 3rd graders to apply in order to see if the reform worked

last one what's stopping a poor person from reading to their kid or choosing a better diet.... you can't answer the question its bad parenting that causes the initial gap from 0-3 period. You can pour all the money you want (We have been doing it for what over 50 years now) it won't solve that initial gap.

It’s not the student’s fault they were parented badly. They shouldn’t suffer because of their parents’ choices.

I absolutely agree - fixing AAP will not alone fix TJ, especially not in the short term.

fair point except that they aren't suffering if they don't go to the top school. P.S life isn't fair.

the same can be said about any kid. If that's the outlook why dump the resources into TJ in the first place? It's a nice facility, just use it to alleviate overcrowding

I would bet a large number of URM who would probably apply to TJ are in private schools.
